So I'm bored and just checked out some of the ads
running at the top of the R/T forum.

Wow. Some really, really fundamentalist churches are advertising with DU!

I'm not quite sure how I feel about that. Freedom of speech, freedom to worship as we please...but I've got to think that these folks are pretty much the antithesis of progressive Democratic philosophy?

So anything goes as long as it brings in the bucks?

How do you all feel about this?

1. Good point Grannie...
But the nice thing about those ads is that you don't have to click them. And if you do and you don't like where it takes you you can always hit the red X.

2. With the Google AdWords, they're not buying advertising specifically on DU
They buy a bunch of keywords that they think people interested in fundie churches would search on or appear in web pages that fundies read. Then whenever Google "sees" those words or phrases it shows one of the fundie church ads. So it's not like DU is selling ad space directly to these disagreeable organizations.

However, if there's anything you think is over the top, let Skinner or one of the other guys know because they can block specific domains from showing up in the google ads.

6. Ah. Okay
I get it. Well, that's okay I guess. I wonder if they have converted any of the regulars in R/T? LOL

I guess stranger things have happened!

10. Now that really would be a miracle!
But the chances of that are about the same as gwb speaking in coherent and complete sentences. :dunce:

You guessed it. That's why BMUS isn't around very often anymore. The fundie google ads were so deceptively well worded that all of a sudden she had an epiphany. I didn't want to say anything because she was always such a staunch atheist on DU, but since she has dyed her hair Jeezus Jan Crouch pink, got a bouffant and is now going door to door handing out Chick Tracts. We all humor her because, believe it or not, she looks so adorably cute in those polyester-rayon blend black v-neck evening gowns. She was last seen in Boca so if she shows up at your door just smile and nod and compliment her on the pink toy poodle she carries around. That's usually enough to get her to go away, but whatever you do, do not, I repeat — do not — let her sing Nearer My God To Thee. It causes her to break down in tears and once that mascara starts running it's not a pretty sight.

Jeezus Jan or BMUS? Even her cat can't tell the difference anymore.

14. I thought BMUS was a woman...
...yet somehow she now looks like a man in drag?

15. 20 or 30 facelifts tend to make someone look like that
But BMUS And Jeezus Jan are still gals to the best of my knowledge.

18. Wrong!
My cat Beaker took one look at that picture and won't come out from underneath the bed now.

I think it must be the lip implants, they make her look like an extremely large, colorful, mutant koi with an agenda.

As far as BMUS's conversion, if continuous exposure to propaganda, threats and imaginary rewards from the ex-MIL and years of living in the buy-bull belt couldn't do it, Google doesn't stand a chance.

I'm shamelessly godless and completely corrupted and living in a town that looks suspiciously like the one pictured in Edward Scissorhands.

Actually that photo made me think of those really bad inflatable sex toys that my friends in college got such a kick out of secreting into each others' rooms just before their parents visited.

Do you have any idea how long it took me to find a non-rated XXX picture of a blow up doll to illustrate your point here?

Is this what you're thinking of?:

Because I do notice a distinct resemblance.

Except, of course, for the fact that the blow up doll obviously looks much more realistic.

edited to add that I showed the picture of the doll to Beaker and he never even blinked.

His reaction to Jan, on the other hand...

3. I believe the Google Ads are triggered
by certain keywords in the text of whichever page you are viewing. So if the discussion concerns fundies, which most threads in R/T mention at some point, then ads targeting that group will appear.

4. I look at it this way
I'd rather be annoyed with the fundy ads that I ignore than know they are being posted on a site where some impressionable person might click on them and then buy into their form of "religion".

5. Let them waste their money here.
They would probably blow a gasket if they knew they were supporting DU. Here's hoping they figure it out.

8. I think it's pretty funny that the Google ad program is so poorly
tuned that they'd be socking it to these fundy jerks to advertise on a site that is totally hostile to them and the diseased horse they rode in on.

I tend to tune this stuff out. Once in a blue moon I'll notice one or two that give me a chuckle.

Anything that keeps this site funded and going is OK with me.

9. I remember seeing ads for...
The Coultergeist's new "book" and Contra coffee (coffee grown by the Contras). Yeah, not exactly a finely tuned machine. But I imagine this place takes a lot of upkeep, so I don't mind them (besides, as a donor I can just turn them off).

12. This is how I think of it
Fundies ----> Pay google ads

Google ads ------> Pays DU for Advertising

Equals:

Fundies------> Paying to Advertise on a website that has 0 chance of conversion.

Everybody wins...cept the fundies.

16. I refuse to get my undies in a knot because of an advertisement
from a place with which I might disagree.

Who cares who's advertising?

I sure don't.

I believe in freedom and not being "upset" because I see an ad that I don't like.
