A loss of Faith...what would it take?
I was just reading some of the other threads, about the purpose of religion, and a question popped up in my head. What would it take for you to lose faith in god? What would need to happen for you to stop believing in god, or leave your religion?

For me, its not too difficult imagining myself believing in god...simply because my position is not one of dis-belief, but of non-belief. In the same manner, if hundreds of alien ships descended on the planet (I don't believe that aliens have come to Earth), I would pretty much immediatly start believing. So if god ever showed himself (or some other proof..it wouldn't be too hard for god), I would become forced, by my new experience THAT OTHERS SHARED, to believe in the existence of god. It would take something extraordinary (not just a book, or some voice, or even a ghostly image while I was in a room by myelf). I don't have faith in atheism or any such nonsense. I am just in a state of non-belief.

But what would it take for the theist in here to accept that god doesn't exist? Its obviously not evil or genocide, because those things are happening. Would it perhaps be observing genocide? Would it be all your family being killed? What would make you change your ideas about god?

2. I don't think that is what he is saying.
I believe he is saying that the concept of having "faith" in atheism is nonesense.

7. No, no, no.
I'm not saying that atheism in nonsense. I am an atheist. Reread my post.

3. If someone can answer this...
then they probably do not have faith.

Most people lose faith over a long period of increments...long periods of not maintaining a relationship with God through prayer, scriptural reading, and worship.

A rational belief in God is not the same thing as faith in God.

4. All of us
in this country are free to "believe" whatever we want to believe. That is what makes this country great. The fact that we can have "ideas" about God openly is important. It has yet to be proven to me that God exists and yet I do believe. However, what makes this country the greatest is that I cannot force you to believe what I believe. There is a large element in the "christian" community that does not want any part of that nonsense. They want us all to believe and act as they do. If the constitution is a victim, no big deal. I look forward to the next civil.

Is your question - WHAT WOULD IT TAKE FOR YOU TO PROVE A NEGATIVE?? I'm not smart enough for such contemplation. Just don't fuck with my constitution.

8. I agree with you.
but this post was not about the constitution or this great country, lol. And I'm not even asking you to prove a negative. I'm not asking you to prove anything. I'm simply asking what would it take for you to lose your faith/belief in god.

6. When He tells me yes, it's true, the universe is 6,000 years old.
And that it was all just an elaborate joke, the fossils, the genetics, the archeology, and everything else...

:P

10. I stopped believing in God after reading Psalm 14:1.
I'd start believing there was one if he did the same thing that you described.
