The Lord's Prayer...short but to the point we should recite daily
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

9. If we are going to memorize and recite stuff
why not something good like "Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock"? It's a little longer, but MUCH better literature.

Or, if literature is not your bent, how about this little diddy? "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America." Not THAT is something we should recite daily.

to assume that everyone believes in god and even more offensive to assume that god is the specific Christian god that prayer is aimed at.

"Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven." Jesus thought we could create a heaven here on earth. That if humans were so in tune with God we could create heaven on earth for everyone.

"Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us." Actually the word for trespass is not a true interpretation of the original. The original translates as debt. What else would a anyone need than his "daily" bread and his debts forgiven?

Notice the prayer doesn't identify any one race, or religion. He was the most egalitarian religious leader ever to walk the earth.

But of course, we don't pay any attention to prayer anyway, even with its meaning subtly changed in translation.

Generally speaking, I don't like being told to pray. If I decide to, I will. If I decide not to, I won't.

That's how I think it should work, and my understanding of the Constitution would encourage me to continue thinking that way.

I want Bush to behave better, and since I realize that's a lost cause, I hope the U.N. delegates today receive him with the esteem he deserves.

The religious right helped put him in power. They have to shoulder some of the blame! The U.N. delegates deserve to hear from President Gore or President Kerry, and not this fake Christian, fake cowboy, fake adult.

religious amongst us who could just use the shortened version. But I agree because of my catholic education. It is a mantra/prayer that I say often. Seems the Pope was tempted last weekend to dabble in a bit of evil.

Seriously, as prayers go, this one is pretty innocuous, and if you WANT to say a prayer daily,
I guess it's as good as any. Where you are going to find argument here is with your use of
the word SHOULD.

You see, there is no one prayer that covers everyone's needs. Some of us need more, some of
us don't feel the need for any. Some feel that the "correct" one is the 23rd Psalm.

In my case, I have spent three of the last eight years reciting the Mourner's Kaddish twice a day,
not because I believed in the words, but out of respect for the beliefs of the loved ones who had
passed away.

And, I would venture a guess that most of us, would prefer that those who were constantly trying to
get us to say or have to look or listen to a prayer, should spend more time living the message rather
than worrying about the words.

Protestants say it; Catholics don't. Now, the reason this prayer is recited so frequently is that Jesus is believed to have told the disciples, "When you pray, say this." So was this last line part of the prayer Jesus told his followers to say, or was it not? I would expect the various Christian sects to at least be in agreement about something as simple as that.

to begin with I'm not telling anyone that they have to pray. I just suggested that it might be a good prayer to recite. Given all the outrageous actions by the current administration I thought it was a wise peace of knowledge for the times. I didn't expect it to be confrontational.

Christians should recite only the lords prayer...doesn't Matthew say that praying any other way makes you a Gentile or something like that? I guess if you gotta believe in god, the lords prayer is a good way to go...thanking god, but not assuming hes gonna change his plan because your asking for something, "Oh please Lord, let me win the lottery..I wil give half the money to the church"

I however, don't believe in god. You were using the "WE" to mean Christians only, right? Theres about a 0% chance that I will ever pray. I don't even pretend to hang my head down in prayer at funerals..like I'm really going to pray everyday.

OK, I won't go there. Personally, all this father in heaven stuff sounds very patriarchal to me. Would it be as effective if it was mother? If she was a kind and gentle goddess, instead of a wrathful male god?

Also the heaven thing is a major obstacle for me. When one has the natural and beautiful Earth, what more can one ask for? Eternal life? Rewards after life seem both a childish idea and selfish.

45. Contemplating the afterlife is maddening.
Consider that much of what we do is maintenance and affirmation of life. So what's there to do once you're dead?

You don't need to buy insurance, or look both ways before you cross the street, or provide food for the table. There's not much reason to have sex, or children, or indulge in the pleasures of the flesh, because you have no flesh. If there's iPods, there's no place to hang them. Not much need for exercise or martial arts. Ballroom dancing, anyone? Golf?

I know you can sit around and worship the Lord, and bask in His/Her radiance, but that could get old quick, assuming there's a sense of time, in which case you've got eternity (eternity!!!) to figure out how to stave off the boredom. Maybe you could go to sleep, or better yet, go into a coma where you dream that you have a life on say, earth. Maybe that's what I'm doing now.

We tend to definte it our own ways and we don't like being dictated to much.

Should there be mandatory scheduled prayers in schools? Not in any school I want to help pay for with taxes.

No one's blocking anybody's path to a church or synagogue or temple or meadow. But the notion of forced prayer is unacceptable.

Choose to do it on your own if you please. But let others make their own minds up for themselves.
