Eric Mangini will remain as head coach of Cleveland Browns
Updated at 4:20 p.m.

BEREA, Ohio -- Eric Mangini will return as Browns coach for the 2010 season.

"I'm happy to announce that Eric Mangini will return as head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 2010," new Browns President Mike Holmgren said in a team release.

"Over the past few weeks Eric and I have had a chance to talk on a number of occasions including our meetings over the last two days. I was able to gain some tremendous insight into his thought process and philosophies, and came away from our meetings very impressed. In my opinion, Eric has gained the respect and admiration of players, coaches and others in the organization, and with him continuing to lead the team I feel that we are headed in the right direction. Working together, our goal is to build on the strong tradition of this franchise and help get the Browns back to the playoffs."

Mangini evidently impressed Holmgren during at least two days of one-on-one meetings, which were held to determine if the men from different football cultures could co-exist and work together to reach the same goal.

1. Actually, I think this is good...
...it really wasn't Mangini's fault...the prevous GM made the team unwinnable.

2. I agree. Wise decision by Holmgren.
Mangini is building a tough, smart team with character. He has been unfairly maligned all season - even considering his 1-11 start.

You have to question some of his personnel moves and talent evaluation, although I have to think some of that was due to character issues and intelligence taking precedence. Hopefully Holmgren and the new GM can help him out and a make splash in FA and with their 11 draft picks.

Supposedly the entire coaching staff is staying put. It's hard to say whether OC Daboll is in over his head whether we're just sorely lacking talent at QB and WR.

Long live the Walrus and the Penguin!

3. I would have been happy with a clean sweep of the coaching staff,
bringing in -- dare I say it - a Walsh disciple.

Yeah, I know big Mike is one of those. But it's a different thing being in the front office than coaching on the field.
