Name: Alice in wonderland chess set number 8 of 1st edition
Code: Alice chess set
This set belongs to Darron Mathews and is set 8 from the first edition of my Alice in Wonderland series.Set numbers 1 to 5 of the first edition had the Jabberwocky as a Knight on the dark side.Sets 6 to 50 had the knight on a horse (the white Knight) instead. This set has the white Knight. The Jabberwocky was replaced because at that time we had great difficulty making it.All our castings are one piece castings and the Jabberwocky had something like a 95% casting failure rate.Being lazy we gave up trying to perfect the technique.(we did this a year later) This set was given as a present to Darron Mathews over 25 years ago and he was kind enough to contact me and send me some photos. The set is in perfect condition and he still has the original wooden box with rope handles and the inlaid copper shim and wood chess board we hand made for it back then.We eventually made 5 editions of 50 sets and then a 6th and final edition of 66 sets.A total of 316 sets were made.Set number 1 of the first edition was stolen from the Alice 125 exhibition. It is pictured in the book based on this exhibition.Darron's set is valued at around
$10,000.More.
