1. We need a ruling on the "cheater" term with McGwire.

He admitted to using steroids, yes. But he hasn't admitted to *what* he used and when. If we're talking Andro, which was okay at the time and banned later (as a steroid) that's a tough call.

Seriously, they could ban creatine and nitro in a year or so, and that will asterisk every baseball player in the league from the last 10 years.

2. McGwire is contrite

In an era when so many ball players used steroids, and when management for the most part knew about it and winked, that will be enough.

I have stated my view that Pete Rose should be in the HoF before, and Trumad did not change my mind.

And that is why he should be in the HOF. Everything happened after he left the field as a player. He shouldn't go in as a Manager, but as a player.

In his autobiography My Prison Without Bars, published by Rodale Press on January 8, 2004, Rose finally admitted publicly to betting on baseball games and other sports while playing for and managing the Reds.

He also admitted to betting on Reds games, but said that he never bet against the Reds. He repeated his admissions in an interview on the ABC news program Primetime Thursday. He also said in the book that he hoped his admissions would help end his ban from baseball so that he could reapply for reinstatement.

In March 2007 during an interview on The Dan Patrick Show on ESPN Radio, Rose said, "I bet on my team every night. I didn't bet on my team four nights a week. I bet on my team to win every night because I loved my team, I believed in my team," he said. "I did everything in my power every night to win that game."

Whether Rose bet every night is significant to whether he had an incentive to influence the team's performance depending on whether he had a bet down on a particular game. John Dowd disputed Rose's contention that he bet on the Reds every night, asserting that Rose did not bet on his team when Mario Soto or Bill Gullickson pitched. Both Gullickson and Soto had ERA's substantially poorer than others in the National League during 1987.

I still would cut Pete some slack since nearly all his playing days did come before gambling, as has been noted by others in this forum. He should be in the HOF but banned from all other baseball activities, IMO.

He was a troglodyte with great hand-eye coordination. His supporters claim he was so versatile, but the Reds couldn't wait to bring along Morgan, Concepcion, and Perez, because they wanted to do everything possible to get Rose out of the infield. He was a horrible infielder and a mediocre outfielder (at best) who could slap the ball into the outfield.

And, btw, he was a miserable excuse for a human being. Ask his wife and kids.

10. Pete Rose because he's Charlie Hustle

and he loved the game.

He gave all out 100% every game, every at bat. Contrast that with Barry Bonds* who became known as a guy who would stand at the plate admiring his home runs...only to see it hit off the wall and he could barely make it to first. Disgraceful.
