To run up the score or not to run up the score
The pressing issue of our day. In the past 24 hours we saw one team (Vikings) get a touchdown way late in the game when the game was already over and another team (Saints) take about 14 knees way late in their game when the game was already over. Does it matter? Will the Cowboys blood be boiling the next time they see the Vikings on the schedule? Will the Cardinals blow kisses to the Saints in the future?

If this were midget football I would draw a line, but dissing millionaires?

Surely to God, someone in the sports forum has an opinion on this issue.

And the last time I checked Favre and a Manning are in the final four.

1. Unacceptable behavior
Unless you're playing the Cowboys.

I also thought it was a nice send-off for Favre. He'll probably never get another chance to throw a TD pass at a home stadium.

2. I'll be honest - I don't like it when teams run up the score.
I criticized the Cheatriots for doing so.

As a Vikings fan, I can say that I did not like that final TD play. I wish they had just run it up the middle.

But if it was going to happen, I did love that it was against the Cowpies.

Heck - maybe Coach Childress thought of it as practice. The Vikes are going to need all the points they can get next week.

28. Is it more respectful to just take a knee on 4th down
and hand it over to the 'boys like Dallas is the kid that can't really keep up? It's the playoffs. The Vikings have had to listen to a week of hype about how the Cowboys were the anointed ones. Was the TD needed? No. Was it disrespectful? Not in a professional playoff game.

Besides, I think it was Favre's decision. Redemption. A giant "fuck you" and "good-bye" to the Cowboy nation. He'll never face them again.

5. The Dallas defense was playing full speed.
Specifically Brookings. Looked to me like he was trying to hurt every ball carrier he came into contact with.

And hey, that's football. But so is scoring touchdowns.

Tough shit for the c'boys. I don't feel bad for them at all.

(Reminds me of when UCLA called that timeout and USC said "Okay. You're still playing? Then so are we." Bam. Touchdown.)

conflicted by your post. I have always been a Favre fan although he has never played for my team, but I do love me some Saints. Favre is a big favorite in NOLA but not next weekend. Fuck the qb of the vikings. If you are a Saints fan, you will root for the Saints. If you aren't, well, root for whomever you want to. I am a Packers fan and appreciate what no. 4 did, but he is a turncoat and I cannot root for him. And besides, the Saints have never made the Super Bowl so now seems like a great time for it to happen. No conflict here.

14. I love ya Bluzmann, I got a serious question
I passively observed the Favre departure from Green Bay from afar and it seemed that the team wanted to force him out to elevate the younger QB but make it look like Favre's fault. Was Favre leaving solely his doing?

Nothing would please me more then to have Drew Brees getting that Super Bowl trophy and what would be better then a Fleur-di-Lis shaped diamond encrusted Super Bowl Ring?

And Bret will most likely be QBing the Cowboys next year. Just kidding. I think.

21. The Vikes qb left Green Bay
He came on national tv and said, "I'm retiring". He was tearing up. So the Packers organization had to move on, as any other business in this country would.
Now I am not a big Thompson (GM) fan but what was he supposed to do? Trade off a promising young qb, who has proven to be good, just so some prima donna sonofabitch could have one more shot at glory? Mark my words, when the qb is gone in Minnesota, they will have nothing. They are shooting their wad on a great qb, but have nothing to back it up once he's gone.

23. But
did he tear up (as he often does) because the Packers put him in a position to do so? Was he "retiring" because thats what the Packers wanted him to do? I think he has proven the Packers wrong and if he gets the Vikings a SB trophy this year it won't matter if he's gone next year.

Not arguing with you my friend, I love my NFC teams, but I believe there has been a different perspective of circumstances outside the frozen tundra.

Regardless I want you fired up and rooting for the Saints next week. WHO DAT!!! Dat be Bluzmann57 pulling for Dem Saints.

24. He quit
The Packers actually flew someone down to Kiln, Mississippi to ask him about it in March of 2007, and he said he was sure of his decision. So once again I ask, what in the hell were the Packers supposed to do? A team simply should not cater to one man, no matter how succesful that man has been. And incidentally, the Pack would not have been in any Super Bowls without Reggie White and co. Defense wins championships.

41. The Packers wanted him to come back
Bluzmann is close. About a month after Favre retired, he let it known that he had changed his mind and wanted to come back. When Ted Thompson heard that, the Packers chartered an airplane to fly down to Mississippi to welcome him back and work out the details. Before they could get down there, Favre changed his mind again and decided to stay retired. At that point, the Pack decided to go with Aaron Rodgers. Of course, as we know, Favre changed his mind again later that year (in July) and wanted to come back. Mike McCarthy said fine, but he'd have to compete for the starting job, since they had started making plans for Rodgers. Favre then asked to be released, but the Pack traded him to the Jets.

almost basically saying they would turn the ball over if they could stop the Vikings. They didn't. Farve saw a shot and took it. Grow up. Nobody bitched when Dallas blew out the Eagles, now did they? Certainly not the Cowboys that did it. It's the divisional playoffs. It's not a playoff team running it up on a 2-13 team at the end of the season.

I just wish Brooking would have taken a couple more steps toward Favre on the sideline so I could have seen Jared Allen whoop his ass.

33. The grown up part is aimed
at Brooking and his actions/comments. I always appreciate your shit stirring.

My first sentence was basically to say that it wasn't like the Vikings were taking shots at the endzone the whole way down the field. They went for it, not by passing, but running. It's not like they were giving it the full offense on fourth down. If Dallas had just stopped them once, the TD would never be.

Again, the snark is aimed at Dallas and not you.

YouDaMan. I have always enjoyed the Vikings. I'm a year or two or three or whatever older then you. My most vivid memory of the Vikings (this is weird) was sometime in the Mid 90's when I was in wherever the Vikings used to play and discovered that old Memorial Stadium had been turned into a parking lot for the big Mall. I'm still sad about that.

Next week should be a rockemsockem in the dome.

Edited on Sun Jan-17-10 11:20 PM by hughee99
Fans deserve to know where their team stands, and a good old fashioned ass-kicking can motivate the team on the losing end address issues to ensure this sort of embarrassment doesn't happen again. These are professionals we're talking about. If a team is losing games by 10-14 points, management doesn't always get the message that serious changes (personnel, coaching or player motivation) need to be made. A 30 point destruction makes it crystal clear and brings more pressure on ownership and coaching to fix the problems. The fans deserve to have these serious problems addressed.

As far as amateur ranks go, sometimes you end up with teams on the schedule where you're just flat-out over matched. I'm not in favor of this at the college level and below.

43. Score 50 only if 60 isn't available
Kick 'em when they're down. Bradshaw is such a wuss he needs Turkey Jones to slam some sense into him again.

BTW, that leads the obscure reference category, Sports Forum 2010.

The banter on FOX after the Vikings game was so pathetic it made me itch to watch my tape of Canes 58 Notre Dame 7 from 1985. I have that one somewhere. Glorious football. Ara cried himself to bed for a month.

Coincidentally I had uploaded a 1987 Canes game to YouTube earlier in the day and it included a brilliant attempt to tack on a last second TD. Jimmy Johnson had freshman Craig Erickson throw deep with a 31-4 lead and 16 seconds remaining against Florida. Damn shame it didn't connect or that could have been famous. Florida deserved every bit of it, after running away from the annual series a few months earlier.

The 9 minute mark is fantastic, a police dog attacking a blow up Gator, followed by Canes trying to rub it in. Now that was football:

I was proud my alma mater USC finally wised up this fall against the Bruins:

Unless the other team can get a defense to stop them.

Hopefully the defense - no matter how bad - can harden the fuck up and take a beatdown without crying about how mean the other team is, though. Getting as asswhooping is embarrassing - no need to humiliate yourself further by whining about it.

No, we don't run up scores if it's HS, college, or some other amateur event.

Pros: The other team's JOB is to stop the other team from scoring. If they can't it's not on the team scoring a ton of points. It's on the guys who get paid to stop the other team and cannot.

54. I think the Cowboys need to watch the film
and take a close look at the point when they were 17 down and the defense was pounding it's chest because they stopped Peterson on a couple runs. Perhaps that show of unearned bravado was the reason the Vikings wanted to jam another 7 points down their throat to remind them they were getting their ass kicked.\

What did Brookings want Favre to do? Take a knee and hand him the ball to give to Romo?

To run up the score. High school, even college, not so much. There's a 50-point rule here in CT. If a team wins by more than 50 points, the head coach is suspended for one game. I don't like the rule at all. But in the pros, I have no issue with "running it up"
