1. Oh noes!
Was it her pinky?

I was reading a piece on Jean-Claude Killy a couple of days ago and he finished one of his first races on one ski because he had a broken leg!

I am tired of her whining. She's a world-class skier. I don't need to hear all her excuses about why she lost. Maybe she's just not - gasp! - as good as the other skiers. She certainly doesn't seem to have any mental toughness.

2. I just think her mind is too filled with all the endorsement deals she's
gonna get to really concentrate.

5. Someone is not doing her any favors
I hadn't even heard of her before the Olympics (nor any of the others, I don't pay enough attention to skiing in between Olympics, which is silly, because I enjoy watching it and we get tons of coverage on CBC). Anyway, the local Seattle media opened their Olympic coverage with 'Lindsay Vonn arrives at Olympics!'

This was prior to her announcing that she might not ski, due to her calf injury. I don't even know what to say about that calf injury!!!

8. She's blonde...
...seriously, she's this year's Golden Girl...Julie Mancuso is just as pretty, but she ain't blonde.

Also, if one of the American women figure skaters had been one of the favorites, they might have focused on her...but there was a gap to fill.

12. The more I've watched skiing
The more I've really liked Mancuso. :)

13. Lindsey currently leads the overall World Cup standings
so she has proven herself to be better than all others.

3. I hate the pre-Olympic hype of individual athletes
The media *could* just cover the games, and turn those who rise to the occasion into stars...

But instead they have to manufacture stardom in advance and turn it into "can so-and-so live up to our hype?"

Oh, and I don't care about Apolo Ohno's medals... I've never seen a sport with medals so dependent on wipeouts and DQs, and while I salute him as a top short-track skater it's so much easier to rack up medals in an event like that where's it's the same thing at a bunch of different distances than in sports without 6 chances to medal in variations on essentially the same thing.

4. I think Ohno's great...but Eric Heiden's five in speed skating
still makes him the greatest US winter Olympian ever.

6. I agree with you about Eric Heiden being the greatest US winter athelete
And if Lindsey Vonn is smart, she'll appreciate how much of an accomplishment it is for her to come home with TWO medals, one of them gold.
I bet you anything, even though he wiped out in a race Bode Miller is pretty happy with his medals.

7. I don't think anyone's gona do what Eric did...they all specialize in
short distances or long...he did it all.

10. Heiden is only a winter athlete
Edited on Fri Feb-26-10 04:02 PM by murphyj87
Heiden has been exclaiming about Clara Hughes.

Clara Hughes is the only athlete in the world to win both multiple medals in winter and multiple medals in summer games(three other athletes have won multiple in one, but only one in the other). She won two bronze in cycling in Atlanta. She won a gold a silver, and two bronze in speed skating in the winter games. She won the bronze medal in 5000 metre long track speed skating in Vancouver.

9. That is a bothersome thing about speed skating
I'd rather see them just compare times. Half of it's about pushing someone else and getting away with it.

11. That's why, in my mind,
there's speed skating (i.e. "the real speed skating") and short track (the new kid on the block, all about the jostling and jockeying)

In regular speed skating you get your own lane and no interference.
