Browns acquire QB Seneca Wallace from Seahawks; release Derek Anderson

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Mike Holmgren has stated emphatically that he doesn't want a quarterback competition. But the drama at the position continues on a club that has had eight different opening day starting quarterbacks in 11 seasons.

On Tuesday, the Browns terminated the contract of one-time Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Anderson. On Monday, they acquired seven-year backup quarterback Seneca Wallace from Seattle.

Those moves were intertwined. The franchise's new president was not going to cut the cord on Anderson until he had Wallace in tow.

League sources continue to speculate that Holmgren may have another QB move up his long sleeve. If he adds another quarterback -- and it might not be of the splash of Donovan McNabb or even Kevin Kolb -- it could signal the end of (Brady) Quinn in Cleveland, too.

Wallace was drafted by Mike Holmgren in 2003. Fujita, Pashos, Wallace -- I like what I've been hearing so far. :thumbsup:

1. his relationship witrh wallace is interesting

he seems to value him as a qb, thus bringing him on yet never seems to fully trust him aat the spot when starting. they seem to whittle down his offensive options when he would come in for hasselback. personally, I like wallace as a player, think he's a might underraated and a fantastic athlete, always thought he would make a hell of a wide receiver.

Holmgren would probably love to draft and tutor his own quarterback, but the Browns have big needs in the Secondary -- hard to gauge what he'll do.

4. Hey JoeyBee -- Holmgren signed TE Ben Watson from the Patriots

CLEVELAND -- After spending much of Thursday negotiating with the Seahawks and Browns, free-agent tight end Ben Watson opted to accept Cleveland's offer.

The Browns filled a gaping offensive hole by signing Watson to a three-year, $12 million contract that includes $6.35 million in guaranteed money, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Watson spent the past six seasons with the New England Patriots, where he previously worked with Browns coach Eric Mangini and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.

"We viewed Ben as one of the top all-around tight ends in the free-agent market," Browns general manager Tom Heckert said.

"Because of his athleticism and intelligence, he has proven valuable as both a receiver and blocker during his career, and has performed well in both facets. He comes from a winning program in New England and possesses the traits that we like in a player. We feel as though he can help us in many different areas and we are excited about his addition to our team."
