|
AFAIK, he's the only sports figure that has a public school named for him in the county I live in!

I can't consider Ruth or several of the other players because they only played against whites.

I used to go to the infamous Candlestick Park and see Willie Mays, who would be my choice if he were listed.

I don't know if he is the best and I never seen him play(but read a lot about him) but I think he should get a mention with the other greats.

12. I voted for Lou Gehrig |

Better overall player than Ruth, imo, just had his career cut too short. The other two guys I love are Sandy Koufax and Joe Dimaggio. I know...two Yankees!! Go figure. Probably helped that they were quiet and gentlemanly. I don't like flashy guys or showoffs.

"the Iron Man," how cool is that? I'm sick of presidents and corrupt politicians names on carriers.

the fact that you're a closet Yankee fan surprises not at all..We'll just keep that little nugget filed away.
Just out of curiosity..if you "don't like flashy guys or showoffs"..why do you root for Manny*?

So you read my post and somehow take from it that I'm a "closet Yankees fan"? Because as a boy I was attracted to quiet heroes with integrity who didn't toot their own horn? I don't care what team someone is on, if they are classy I'm probably going to admire them. But I'll go easy on you seeing as you've never had anyone classy to look up to in your boyhood sports world. Jeffrey "one flap down" Leonard was probably your hero.

He was the complete package, more so than Ruth.
Second place vote for Stan Musial.

Ruth had a higher obp, slugging, more home runs. And would have been a hall of famer as a pitcher as well. He held the record for shutout innings as a pitcher in the World Series for 50 years.

I saw so much of Roberto Clemente as a kid that he will forever be my favorite player of all time,
but Mays had a bit more power than Clemente so I decided to vote for Mays.

However, since I only have one choice I'll say Josh Gibson.
