You know the exclusively articles?
Surprising sometimes when I see a headline such as Rolle likely heading to the Giants or Dansby heading to the Dolphins it happens.
What I'm saying is I seen the 49ers-McNabb come up twice on those. I'm actually following this story VERY closely and will post an article if anything happens.
I went to a 49ers board and found a thread of a fan asking what was in the Insider article(which is exactly what I was looking for). A poster said you can't link to it obviously because you have to be a member but claimed to quote it
In the wake of the Scot McCloughan leave of absence -- and possible relocation -- we consider what changes might befall the team as we throttle towards the draft and the rest of the offseason. One interesting potential development, per Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News, is that QB Alex Smith's job security (tenuous as it is) might be further threatened now that his one vocal supporter is likely gone.
If this is the case, the 49ers might be up the creek, as the saying goes, since the free agent market is all but dried up. Or are they?
Going a bit speculative here, but back when we considered the possible trade destinations for Donovan McNabb, the 49ers were considered one of the front-runners given the slate of QBs on the depth chart and their trade ammunition. If Kawakami's insights are true -- that team president Jed York was instrumental in going after Kurt Warner, and "pushed" for the team to call on Jay Cutler and Brady Quinn in the past -- and if McCloughan is no longer in the way, what's stopping York from again pushing to acquire a player that is, by all accounts (and for the right price), available? If this team is suddenly the favorite to win the NFC West, wouldn't it make sense to acquire a proven veteran QB that -- failures at the highest level aside -- has been to the playoffs on a near-yearly basis? Doesn't seem like much of a stretch, we'll see whether this heats up.

Even though Reid has state McNabb will be back, a trade is not that far fetched and is very possible. Tim Kawakami, a 49ers beat writer for the San Jose Mercury News, stated earlier this off-season that the Niners might make an attempt to trade for the Pro Bowl quarterback.
He speculates that the 49ers might press even harder now for a quarterback ( I think if the Niners are still going to go after a quarterback it is going to be a proven commodity like McNabb since they have an unknown in Smith) since they fired Scot McCloughan as general manager. Kawakami reported that McCloughan was one of the last supporters of Alex Smith as a starting quarterback.
Also, Kawakami said if you look at the past couple of off-seasons with the Niners, you will see a pattern with the team's president Jed York. Kawakami reported that last year York was the instrumental force behind the team wining-and-dine former Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner.
After that failed attempt, York urged the team to inquire about the availability of both Jay Cutler and Brady Quinn. Obviously the Niners stayed the course with Smith but with no one in York's way now (like Kawakami has been reporting), he has the full power to go after another marque quarterback like McNabb and to a lesser extent Vick.
http://eaglesmix.com/2010/03/mcnabb-on-moveto-niners.htmlAlso as PRETZEL mentioned McNabb is entering the final year of his contract so he'll have a say in regards to what team he prefers to play for in order to get a deal worked out because many teams will not offer a lot for a player that may not be there the year after. Cardinals have also been mentioned in rumors and while I wouldn't mind having him I would like to see what Leinart has got especially entering his final year of his contract.
