Sports viewers mostly Repukes..

Considering the source, I believe this poll may be suspect...but if it's true, why aren't more Democrats checking out sports?

So says a new study among hundreds of thousands of Americans examining the correlation between viewers' favorite sports and their voting habits. And, the survey shows, most dedicated sports watchers are much more likely to vote with the GOP than they are to vote with Dems.

GOPers are most likely to watch the PGA Tour, college football and NASCAR, according to the study. But if GOP ad buyers want to reach more frequent voters, they should focus on the PGA; golf fans told researchers they were much more likely to vote than NASCAR fans say they are. Meanwhile, Dems hold the largest advantages among basketball fans, both those who watch the NBA and the WNBA.

This Sports Forum is a nice cave on DU and even though there are sports fans that never post here it seems that there is a major dislike for sports. It's not just that thread, anyone time you see a sports thread in GD and LBN you see it.

and when you went to a Seahawks game, and tried to pass out Gore literature, etc., most ignored you and took the pasty-face-lying Bush stuff...maybe because gender-wise women are mainly dems, while men tilt repuke, and it's still men who watch sports.

but I just don't understand that kind of attitude...it's not as if Democratic leaders aren't into sports. President Obama is a major sports fan..so was Bill Clinton. So where does this disdain for sports from some here at DU come from?

13. Yeah. When sports are dicussed at DU it is a

truly bizarre experience. I know people who have no interest in sports. My friends basically call me a sports freak but there is not the same level of disdain for it as at DU. They just see it as my outlet -- which it is. Bad week at work -- I look forward to the Phillies game each night or the Final Four or the World Cup. It is a great diversion. But like a lot of things at DU, it just means I am feeding the capitalist machine -- very tiresome.

The survey doesn't even have boxing listed. Which I guess, more than anything else, shows how far boxing has fallen..

Those GOP promoters you speak of, in particular Don King, have ruined the sport for millions...including myself. I used to watch boxing...I no longer do. Mostly because it's shown itself to be crookeder than a $3 bill.

I mean the actual data shows a pretty close skew for most major sports between dems and repubs. I'd bet that when adjusted for gender vs. party id, the sports viewing public is fairly even.

That's kind of a great thing about sports, you go to a venue where you can put aside many divisions that usually keep us apart and just cheer for the home team.

Compared to golf, which produces a lot of wing nuts, tennis tends to have democrats and liberals in the upper echelon. There are exceptions (for example, Pete Sampras and Chris Evert in tennis and David Duval and Rocco Mediate in golf), but overall it holds pretty true.

I think it may have something to do with the way the sports are constructed--tennis is not nearly as exclusive as golf is, for one thing. Even though it's thought of as a country club sport, there are many public tennis courts that are free of charge if someone has a racket and balls (equipment rental in golf costs almost as much or more than purchasing a cheap racket). Also, since tennis players face each other in competition, the dynamic is different. Golf is fundamentally self-focused. But tennis players have to understand their opponent--it's a sport that fosters empathy in a certain way. (Of course, football and basketball teams have to know their opponents strengths, weaknesses, tendencies, etc., but I think the dynamic is different in tennis.) There's also a certain dialogue-like logic to a tennis match--long rallies are like lively conversations. Besides, every game starts with love :)

That said, I do think in general, that's right. I know a lot of liberals that do look down on sports, particularly football. And they're not even polite about it. I invited a neighbor to a Super Bowl party once, and instead of politely declining, her roommate said, "Polly hates football".

If someone invited me to a party, 1) I'd probably go, and 2) I would never have the bad manners to insult the reason for the party! Can you imagine?

I had to defend hockey to a friend the other day. I know everyone thinks it's hilarious to say "I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out" (har har har) but I explained to her that fighting in hockey is very psychological and that the off-ice incidents involving hockey players are much, much lower than in basketball and football. She was amazed; she'd never seen it that way before, that the fighting, which leads to far fewer injuries than the actual sport does, actually helped leach off aggression.

Honestly, I'm not too surprised. Dems and liberals have more respect for women, in general. Women in sports are generally viewed as pretty things to dress up in pom poms and sexy skirts for the amusement of men. Of course, there are women's leagues but they are generally viewed in a patronizing and a condescending way. Basically how Repukes view women in general. Look at all the hoo haw over Title 9. To show how women are viewed in sports one need look no further than the game where Terrell Owens, after a touchdown, grabbed a cheerleader's pom poms and proceeded to perform a grotesque bump and grind parody of a cheerleader's routine. Basically revealing to the world the hateful way he (and I'm sure a lot of other athletes) think women are there for (eye candy for men).

They were great. But the ACLU, of all people, helped get women cheerleaders in the door.

I loved the all-male cheerleaders. I had a friend who was one, and he said that they actually didn't prohibit women from joining - they just had to be able to do the gymnastics stunts.

Those cheerleaders were awesome. They wore yellow sweaters with a blue block M, and white pants. You still see a few leftovers at Homecoming - they went sometime into the 1980s. They were so distinctive. I wouldn't mind if they had some women in their ranks - but I loved the yellow sweaters and white pants.

I was trying to Google a picture of them, but so far all I could find was a bunch of women in skimpy clothes, so any help would be appreciated.

And the cheerleading from the broadcast booth for the military and how "proud" we are of the "heroes" defending our freedom overseas. And how we were treated to the "Michael Milkin charity tour" of broadcast booths a few years ago in baseball. I'm sure the Repuke fans lapped that up.

And I don't think my DU credentials can be questioned. I like college football and the PGA Tour (terrible golfer myself), but wouldn't give you two cents for NASCAR. College football, college basketball, NFL, hockey, PGA tour, baseball, NBA, probably in that order. Soccer? Would rather take a pill.
