MLB: Managerial turnover could be historic

Dismissals, retirements may exceed record 13 changes.

The recent dismissal of Don Wakamatsu and naming of Daren Brown to an interim role made the Mariners the fifth team to make a managerial change since the start of the season, a significant amount of turnover for any year. But that only scratches the surface in 2010.

Managing icons Bobby Cox, Lou Piniella and Cito Gaston are all expected to step down at the end of this campaign, and by the time Opening Day 2011 rolls around, a seismic shift in the managerial landscape will possibly have taken place.

How a managerial situation unfolds is perhaps the most unpredictable element of Major League Baseball, but the sport could be approaching historic levels. Since 1902, the year after the debut of the American League, the most managing changes made from one Opening Day to the next was 13, which happened in 1992 and 2003, according to STATS LLC.

This year, it looks like there's already a guaranteed eight, when you combine the five changes that have been made with the three managers planning to retire, and there may well be others.
