Many held mini-state flags and tea leaves they have been waving in the stands all week for good luck.

It is the leaf of the ti plant, no relation to the one found inside all those bags, that is considered good luck. Ti plants are often planted outside apartment buildings, for instance.

I mua na keiki!! (Go Hawai'i kids!!!)

edit: Visitors to the islands are most likely to encounter ti leaves as the outer wrapping of laulau, a traditional lu'au food. (You peel them off first, then eat the pork and fish filling and the inner wrapping of taro leaves.)
