We all think they have a ridiculous sense of entitlement as is. I think alumni and the media are the only ones that really care when the game is.

22. LOL @ agree
I thought mad's post was his usual 24/7 snark.

Michigan and Ohio St are THE big ten? What about the other teams?

28. The Big Ten was referred to as the Big Two and Little Eight from the mid 50's to the late 80's
It was always, Ohio State, Michigan, and the other eight.

3. Hopefully Andy Katz is wrong. Because as a Badgers fan, it blows.
No Iowa, No Nebraska? Id be willing to play 1 out of those 2 every year, but neither? I dont like that.

Competitive balance. Looks like Nebraska and us will close out the year. We'll see.

5. It's a power move by the money men...
Just to show that they can. Period. It's another tradition that's going to fall by the wayside, like the Reds playing the first game of the regular season.

7. I don't see you crying about it like your sister, 1goblue.
Everyone knew 11 + 1 equaled 12. I wonder if that's it or we move east.

8. I'm not happy about it but I'm glad the game will still close the season
I always think tradition should outweigh most innovation. Michigan and Ohio State built the Big Ten, it would not be the league it is without this rivalry. And people need to honor and respect that.

9. The last five years forced Delaney to act. Tradition only goes so far.
If OSU doesn't get stomped by Florida and Michigan hangs with USC in January 2007 none of this might not have happened. But 11 was always an odd number. It was a matter of time. Change, sometimes, is very, very good.

11. Getting rid of Penn State would have evened it back up
The whole thing is ridiculous. And I don't want Nebraska. They don't belong. They don't care about tradition. I hope they lose every freaking game this year.

13. I'm just a lonely traditionalist
though it's becoming increasingly clear to me that there are a few Big Ten schools who could give a rat's ass about tradition.

I'm not out of touch. I just know that things worked the way they were. This is a very insidious move. It's going to change college football in a BAD WAY. It's not just about Michigan - Ohio State. It's about Nebraska - Oklahoma, Penn State and Pitt, Nebraska - Colorado, and who knows what else down the line? The backyard rivalries (if the NCAA or the moneygrubbers have their way) will be eliminated. They are a thorn in the side of the greedy.

And that will ultimately harm college football. It will still exist, but it won't be nearly as fun or good.

15. a question
I wasn't into sports much when the SEC expanded to 12 - had a huge amount on my plate personally and professionally, and just wasn't paying attention.

So, the question. Were there people as upset about the addition of South Carolina and Arkansas to the SEC, and the split into divisions, as there seem to be people upset about the Big Ten realignment?

And is it just a few posters here, or is the Big Ten getting most of the attention? I see almost nothing about the Pac-10's expansion, which seems just as big a deal.

I'm just curious if I'm getting a slanted view of things, or if expansion and realignment always cause a kerfluffle amongst traditionalists.

on division realignment until at least next month. That's when you'll see all the Pac-10 haters come out of the woodwork.

I kinda wish the SEC had expanded, too, but I think we're getting plenty of media as it is.

Is it Thursday night yet?

20. You can like the Pac10 and still hate expansion
Look, at this point, I know people are just egging me on and that they are enjoying how much I am loathing expansion in the Big Ten. As I've mentioned, it makes me feel physically ill, and that's not an exaggeration.

But it's just not going to be good for the game. It's good for the sports books, and ESPN, and people who like to bet on sports. It's good for the corporatists in the conferences.

But it's going to create a lot of unnecessary travel (which will gradually put smaller schools and women's team at a disadvantage). It's going to ruin backyard brawls. It's going to disconnect one generation of sports fans from all the previous ones. The stadia are going to have a gap between the game watching experience of the average fan and the people who buy boxes to entertain clients, and the so-called VIPs.

It's just not going to be as good. The fans need to speak up.

I can't even see some of these alignments lasting. They don't make sense. Some are based on who's good now, or who happens to be running the department or athletic department. They are going to create really uneven divisions, or divisions that might work for one sport but are nonsensical for another.

23. If it wasn't for expanision
they would still be the PCC-5 or PCC-6. or PAC-8.

My point is, I'm an Arizona State fan and along with Arizona they were among the final two teams added to what is called the Pac-10. If it wasn't for expansion, my favorite team, would still be in the WAC.

I don't understand what sportsbooks have to do with anything. The thing gamblers care about is point spreads. That is it. I'm sure they are sports fans themselves and their opinions may vary on how they feel on expansion in general. But the bottom line is they care about points spreads.

I'm glad the Pac-10 added Utah but wish they added Boise St. They did add Colorado who lost to Colorado State last year so I can't say this year's expansion was necessarily based on who's good now because they were terrible last year. I don't mind. The divisions no matter how they are based will run in cycles. Some teams will be up some years, down other years.

17. Well, DU didn't exist when the SEC expanded, so we never had those arguments here.
If DU was around, yes we would have argued ourselves senseless about it. Especially since the expansion of the SEC added a total of four more teeth to the conference!

Obviously, I meant in the media and amongst sports fans, mad. I just don't remember it much, I was recovering from a nasty divorce that ended a nastier marriage, and trying to go to school full time and hold down a job full time.

And there are plenty of teeth in South Carolina. Look at the big grin of the Ol' Ball Coach. Of course, he's not grinning that much with the SEC sniffing around his place.
