Cup champ Niemi joins new-look San Jose crease
The San Jose Sharks couldn't beat Antti Niemi last season in the Western Conference Final, so now they've made sure they won't have to face him again -- they signed the Stanley Cup-winning goaltender to a one-year contract Thursday.

Terms of the deal were not revealed, but multiple media reports say Niemi will make $2 million this season.

"Antti's play last season speaks for itself," Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson said in a statement. "Our goal this summer was to create the best goaltending unit we could, and we feel we have successfully done that."

The Sharks allowed long-time goaltender Evgeni Nabokov to leave for Russia as a free agent, replacing him first with Antero Niittymaki, who signed a two-year deal on July 1.

1. I'm excited about this
Between Niemi and Nittymaki I have few worries about SJ's goaltending for the coming season! Can't wait for October to get here!

5. I'm glad to see you're over the grieving process..
the sudden collapse of the Dodgers, along with the trading of Manny and now the beginning of the McCourt's trial, must be mighty stressful upon those who would root for the hated blue.

Hang in there..I feel your pain..

Hey, I agree with you about the Sharks' goaltending. This is the best combination they've had since Nabby and Kiprusoff..

7. Hey, I need SOMETHING to take my mind off of
the Dodgers, A's, USC.....and the Rams blowing two opportunities to win their opener!!

And on top of all that I only went 8-8 in my football picks!!? Yeah, I picked the Niners to beat the Seahawks for chrissakes!! Silly me!
