It all starts with beating Michigan consistently, and Tressel was doing that even before RichRod's troubled tenure.

Michigan 8 times in 9 seasons
In 2006 OSU played the second ranked team 3 times and the fourth ranked team
once w/ 3 of the four games on the road and finished 3 and 1 against those teams
OSU was the last team to beat Oregon too.

BTW OSU lost to the much better team when they played Wisconsin this year.
