Titans place Vince Young on IR...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher said Vince Young needs season-ending surgery on his throwing hand and that the Titans are placing the quarterback on injured reserve within the next couple days.

Young saw a hand specialist Monday, and Fisher said team doctors recommended the surgery to repair Young's torn flexor tendon in his right thumb. Young suffered the injury late in the third quarter of Sunday's 19-16 overtime loss to Washington.

Fisher also said he didn't know - and didn't sound as though he cared - if Young will get an outside opinion.

"He may want to get a second opinion. He may want to get two dozen opinions. Our doctor said for his position, it needs to be fixed," Fisher said.

Rusty Smith replaced Young in the game, and Fisher said again Monday the rookie would be the starter against Houston on Sunday. Smith is a sixth-round pick out of Florida Atlantic, and the Titans are bringing in Chris Simms to back up Smith with Kerry Collins needing a couple more weeks to heal his strained left calf.

2. Both have contracts through the end of 2011. Should be interesting.

Adams has stuck with Fisher since the Houston Oiler days. It's one thing to put up with Pacman Jones, but another to deal with a starting QB.

VY has pulled some crazy stuff. Anger management issues, anyone?

Either way, clearly Fisher is sick of dealing with him.

As I said in another thread, I am really pulling for VY, but he makes it hard. If Fisher had his way, Young would be gone, and Fisher is undoubtedly one of the better coaches in the league (if he were in one of the media meccas, he'd be considered a genius coach); but because Fisher has to deal with an owner who is willing to protect VY and enable his bad behavior, if someone goes, it will be Fisher.

VY, not so much. If he gets cut, only a desperate team will pick him up.
