Ohio State president says Boise and TCU don't deserve to play in NC..
Edited on Wed Nov-24-10 10:34 AM by Upton
Even if TCU and Boise State run the table, they still don't deserve to be in the Bowl Championship Series title game, Ohio State president E. Gordon Gee said Wednesday.

In an interview with The Associated Press, the president at the university with the largest athletic program in the country said that TCU and Boise State do not face a difficult enough schedule to play in the national championship game.
-------

"I do know, having been both a Southeastern Conference president and a Big Ten president, that it's like murderer's row every week for these schools. We do not play the Little Sisters of the Poor. We play very fine schools on any given day.

Have to say I agree with this Buckeye 100%..BSU and TCU would not be undefeated had they been playing in a top conference week in and week out.

but this OSU president is hardly the only one who holds that opinion. A good part, if not the majority, of the college football world agrees with him.

Until they adopt a playoff system, the "National Champion" is a hollow title founded on subjectivity.

8. Simple common sense..
will tell you a team that lines up against the likes of Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, and LSU is playing a superior conference
schedule to a team that plays, as in the case of Boise,.. Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, and San Jose State.

12. How can you tell they are a "better team"
if either Boise or TCU get a pass all the way to the NC game by playing, as the OSU president puts it, "Little Sisters of the Poor?" And don't tell me it will then be decided in the NC game, because anyone can beat anybody in one game. It's running the gauntlet to get there that both Boise and TCU unfairly get to avoid..

26. Well said; strength of schedule is a ridiculous crutch
That term barely existed two or three decades ago. The focus was exactly as you described; how good are you, not who have you played?

Boise State is an extremely special team. Watching them on tape I'm beyond envious, as a Canes fan. Their sophistication on offense is extraordinary, so many sensible passing options at varied depth. TCU is also very good but I don't trust them or put them in a special category like Boise State, which leads the nation in YPPA Differential.

In a normal year the major conferences receive every benefit of a doubt. Programs like Boise don't have long term staying power. This season they opened near the top of the polls for good reason -- talent level and experience -- and have remained there.

IMO, Boise is actually underrated, not overrated. Among the unbeaten or 1 loss teams, the only one I would take straight up against Boise is Ohio State. And barely. I'd be thrilled to take Boise State against Oregon or Auburn. Particularly as an underdog, which would be semi-theft.

10. TCU has two so called signature wins all year..
one, over an inconsistent 5-5 OSU team that they beat by 9 at home. The other, over an overrated Utah squad that was promptly ripped apart by a mediocre Notre Dame the next week.

Who have they beaten? In what way do they deserve to play for the NC?

15. The weak schedule argument is bunk
TCU & Boise State play in a weaker conference therefore their overall level of competition played week in and week out won't be the same as a team playing the the SEC or Big Ten. But what about out of conference schedule? Because teams from the BCS conferences play a tougher conference schedule they are hesitant about scheduling tough non-conference opponents. Schedules are also made years in advance. Oregon State was a preseason top 25 school when TCU beat them. Utah was also a top 25 preseason school. TCU can't be faulted because those schools were overrated.

I'm pretty sure that when Boise State scheduled Oregon State and Virginia Tech they did it to strengthen their schedule. Both schools were preseason top 25 schools and VT was a preseason top 10 school when Boise State beat them. It's not Boise State's fault that VT sucked this year. I'm sure when they scheduled them a couple years ago they expected VT to be a powerhouse.

Do you think Alabama, Ohio State, Auburn etc want to put Boise State or TCU on their non-conference schedule when they have a tough conference schedule ahead? No, that's why they pay cupcake schools hundreds of thousands of dollars to come and get trounced during non-conference play. If UofM or MSU were ranked in the top 10 preseason and had a shot at the national championship i wouldn't want them playing a tough non-conference opponent. Until there is a playoff system the majority of BCS conference schools will avoid playing tough non-BCS conference schools. And with the way the system is set up i don't blame them. It sucks for Boise State and TCU because they play in weak conferences and there is no benefit for a BCS conference school to put them on their non-conference schedule.

21. And once the Big 10 and Pac 10 start having a playoff next year,
there will be even less incentive to take a Boise St. or TCU for their non-conference opponents. Right now, the 10's (Big and Pac) don't have that playoff and to make up for it, many teams try to schedule at least 1 difficult non-conference game. They hope this will help to balance out the BCS advantage the SEC and Big-12 get (and the ACC would get if they were any good to begin with) from having a tough game at the end of the year. That's why the non-BCS-conference teams can't schedule SEC and big-12, and starting next year, you can add in the 10's as well. The ACC and Big East, being overall weaker BCS conferences may still schedule them because they still need an added boost (provided they win).

16. I heard a great comment about teams like Boise, Utah, etc....
Look at the players who play in the NFL and only a handful come from teams like Boise State and Utah. This is a clear indication to me that these teams are not even close to being the top teams in the country.

Oh---and of course their weak ass schedule on top of that...

BUT----this will never be settled until there are playoffs.

Edited on Wed Nov-24-10 02:35 PM by hughee99
he should schedule them. Dropping Eastern Michigan and Marshall to add Boise St. and TCU would give OSU added strength of schedule bumping them up in the polls and eliminating the competition. If OSU had wins against both teams, neither would get a BCS bowl and OSU would be a lock for one, even if they didn't win the Big-10.

30. I don't know about that, E. Michigan and Marshall played weaker schedules
and still sucked this year. Boise and TCU have at least beat the same number of top 25 ranked teams as Ohio State, Wisconsin and Oregon (two of them to this point), and more than Stanford (who only beat one ranked team), though the rest of their schedule is pretty easy. I'm not saying Boise and TCU's schedules are as hard as a BCS conference's team, but they are at least playing and beating some quality opponents.

E. MI and Marshall sucked against their own conference.

23. Completely irrelevant..
I've been a big detractor of the Big Ten, but I do consider it an elite conference. Something the WAC and the MWC definitely aren't. The thought that we could have the conference champion of a mid-major, possibly even two of them, in the NC game just boggles the mind.

33. Or the 2010 Rose Bowl?
Ohio State 26 Oregon 17 and Tressel could have scored more but shut it down
so the last team to beat # 1 ranked Oregon was Ohio State.

**********

If things play out as they might:
Jim Tressel's 10 seasons ....
will have been in 3 national championship games
8 BCS bowls in 10 seasons
7 Big Ten Titles (outright or ties) 6 in a row
and from 2002 to 2009 OSU except for 2004
OSU has finished in the top 10

32. As an Ohio State fan (OH YOU Grad) living in Columbus w/ family members
who were Professors @ OSU .... I took classes and did research there .... and I was
friends w/ a couple of former players ..... my son used to go to a summer day camp
@ OSU and played football w/ some of the "stars" A.J. Hawk, Santonio Holmes, and
less well know players (they were class acts) all I can say is I want to apologize for
Gordon Gee and hopes he gets the clue to shut the hell up.

Gee is good @ raising money and bringing in talent to the University but he is also a
pain in the ass who talks too much .... Examples:
Brown University got tired of his act and showed him the door
@ Vandy he wrote about the problems of big time football
@ Colorado he did not say word one about the extra down that brought Colorado a National title

OSU has played Marshall, Ohio U, Eastern Michigan, Purdue, Minnesota, Indiana, and a so so
Miami team this year all of whom are in the blind sisters of the poor group.

OSU played one good team this year and got its butt Kicked ... Wisconsin
OSU has played three middle of the road teams and won ..... Illinois, Penn State, and Iowa

The only thing that TCU & Boise State have done is won their games and played good football
and they have won my respect.

35. They've "won their games"..
Yes they have, but Gee's point is that TCU and Boise play in soft conferences. Lets take a look.

TCU's MWC schedule: Utah, BYU, Air Force, San Diego State, UNLV, Colorado State, New Mexico and Wyoming..

Boise's WAC schedule: Hawaii, Nevada, Fresno State, Louisiana Tech, Idaho, Utah State, New Mexico State, and San Jose State..

You can't seriously tell me you believe those two schedules match up to the schedule any team playing a full season in the Big Ten, SEC, Pac-10 or Big 12 has. Heck, were Boise or TCU to play in an elite conference, facing top athletes every week, the attrition alone would get to them. Gee is correct.
