Miami fires Randy Shannon after 7-5 season
Randy Shannon was fired as Miami’s head football coach Saturday night, hours after the Hurricanes lost to South Florida 23-20 in their home finale.

“We have made a decision to seek new leadership for our football program,” Miami athletic director Kirby Hocutt said in a UM press release. “Our expectations are to compete for championships and return to the top of the college football world. We will immediately begin a national search.”

Canesport.com originally reported that University of Miami president Donna Shalala called an emergency Board of Trustees meeting Saturday night to discuss Shannon’s future.

Multiple sources close to the program later told Canesport.com that Shannon and his staff were told late Saturday night that they would be fired Sunday.

1. I am a USF fan first....
...but being born and raised in a diehard Miami household, I always support "The U". I am one fan that is actually disappointed to see Shannon go. He didn't win as many games as he was expected to, but he did incredible things to change the culture of the team for the better. Their graduation rates are second-highest in the nation and he has managed to keep Miami out of the news. I think UM needs Shannon in some form or another. He may not be the best coach, but he has really cleaned up the team and makes sure they all follow the rules. He will always have my respect.

2. He obviously sensed it was coming the past few weeks
Shannon made one erratic and pathetic comment after another, almost daily. Paraphrased, "The schedule is too tough. Nobody else has to play FSU and Virginia Tech in the same season. Has anyone thought about that? Look at our non conference schedule. Of course I'd love to change it and rack up some easy wins."

A few days ago he was bragging about finishing 2nd in the ACC Coastal Division for the first time.

I attended the game Saturday. Shannon threw a ridiculous fit when USF's final play was ruled a TD. He leaped up and down, pointing accusatory fingers at the circle of refs who were waiting for the booth review's verdict. He calmed and walked away for a few seconds, then spun around and repeated his actions. It was the sign of a desperate emotional man who knew he'd lost a job he can't hope to approximate. It's either coordinator or very low level head coach for him now.

Still, he's a very good guy and I wish him well, even if he got too much credit for supposedly turning around the Canes off the field. There wasn't much to fix. That brawl started by rogue FIU several seasons ago allowed false impressions of troublemakers and arrests galore, even though it had already declined severely and never did approach levels like recent Florida.

4. Yhe U has to completely wipe the slate of their current coaching crop...
Larry Coker began the decline and his Assistant Shannon finished it...

I'll hand it to Sullivan---he can recruit and he recruited amazing talent. But coaching is another animal and simply put, he's a lousy football coach.

I really really like the idea of going after a guy like UConn's Randy Edsall.... a guy with who can coach limited talent to success. Imagine if he had superior talent to coach.

3. Interestingly enough, America's Team also finished 7-5, and now
everyone loves Coach Kelly!

Then again, he went 7-5 with a program that had been decimated by the incompetent best friend of Condo-liar Rice, and then by Charlie Weiss.

5. Thing is---Miami's talent is amazing...
they've got quite a few players who will compete well on the next level.....

but the coaching---ugg.... yesterday's game was a perfect example of how bad the coaching was.

6. That's the difference...Notre Dameis trying to rebuild, Miami
should already be re-built. Who do you think they'll get?
