2. Mattingly

is cursed. We had a drought when he played and now are in another drought. He's gone. I'd fire Torre, Donnie and Mel. Give the job to Girardi for this year, promote Neil Allen to pitching coach and see if Chili Davis is available for hitting coach. In the offseason, I'd try to get Piniella back here. Bobby Valentine would be a good hire too.

They've had too much of the calming influence. They need a more in your face leader now to shake them out of this funk. The change in style would work wonders. I wish Billy Martin was still around. He's be managing the team already.

7. Has the offense really been that bad?

They're 5th in all of baseball in runs scored, 5th in OBP (.344), and 10th in SLG (.423), so the offense hasn't been "abysmal" by any stretch.

The Yankees' problem isn't hitting or pitching: it's defense. Aside from A-Rod and maybe Posada, there isn't an above-average defender in the whole pile. Errors aren't really the problem - getting to the ball is. It's almost impossible to get by in MLB now with a sub-par defensive outfield, and that's what the Yankees are dealing with, not to mention a SS that would be better suited to CF, a rookie 2B, and an aging 1B. The defense is a massive problem, and if the Yankees want to make it to the playoffs this year, they need to address the issue now rather than later.

they've averaged 2.5 runs a game. That's worse than Tampa. The offensive stats are skewed from a few huge games. The offense has been a problem. It doesn't help that Torre bats Womack second and Matsui 4th.

You are right about outfield defense. Bernie is horrid in Center these days. Torre thinks he's fine. Matsui is OK in the outfield. Sheff is bad. Cano is an excellent defensive 2nd baseball. If he qualified, he'd be second in the AL in range factor and zone rating. And he turns a quick dp. A-Rod has had a bad year defensively. He should be at short with Jeter in Center. Tino is good defensively, but he's done offensively. The hot streak was a fluke.
