San Francisco -- San Francisco will host the next America's Cup, heralding a potential renaissance in the sport of sailing and a major boon to the local economy, sources told The Chronicle.
A formal announcement has yet to be made, and last-minute talks with lawyers continued after 2 p.m., but sources close to the selection process told The Chronicle that San Francisco will be picked. A spokeswoman for race organizers, though, said reports of a win "are just speculative."

San Francisco had been the early front-runner to host the 34th Cup after BMW Oracle Racing, owned by billionaire Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, captured the trophy in February off the coast of Valencia, Spain. The team is sponsored by San Francisco's Golden Gate Yacht Club, and the winning syndicate gets to pick where it will defend the Cup.
