Maryland hires a new football coach and its.....NOT
Mike Leach. Its Randy Edsall of UConn...:wtf:. So the Fridge is fired because you want someone to fill seats...and the coach of a winner of maybe the worst BCS conference in the country is going to do this? Seriously? While what he did at UConn was impressive there is nothing about this guy which makes me think he's going to be a better recruiter and attract more fans than Friedgen.

1. You're probably right
Maryland didn't need to replace the coach they got now but I think Randy Edsall is a very good coach. He built UConn from a I-AA program. His team also exceeded expectations many times in the past. He did recruit Donald Brown who was a very good back in college. Though I'm sure Maryland had many talented players, Vernon Davis comes to mind.

2. They fired the ACC coach of the year
Edited on Sun Jan-02-11 09:00 PM by TZ
And replaced him with the Big East Coach of the year. And since the Big East is such a football powerhouse...:eyes: Oh, if it wasn't Friedgen they were replacing ( or if he'd left voluntarily) I'd be fine, though not excited by the hire. He's good, but come on , he's not Urban Meyer though maybe the Maryland AD thinks he is.

3. Oh I understand what you mean
about the coach being forced out. I agree you're probably right he didn't need to be replaced. I was just saying I think Edsall was a good hire. It is very difficult to build a program from I-AA. You can't downplay that I think. Watch how Western Kentucky does--a team that recently made the jump. Expect a lot of losing seasons from them. They were 2-10 this year. He may not be Urban Meyer but Urban Meyer was MAC and MWC coach of the year before moving on to Florida where he has a recruiting advantage. His success in the MAC and MWC, especially turning around Bowling Green, is how he moved up the ranks.

Let me say again that I'm with you when it comes to Marland's handling of the coach they had before. At least this keeps them far away from Mike Leach. :)

5. I remember reading somewhere
i forget where..but during most of his interviews he is very unprofessional and in one, he wore flip-flops to the interview with the President and AD. Not saying he did it at Maryland but it could explain it..:patriot:

6. Maybe they should have had it in a storage shed with the lights off
and he would have been more comfortable.

9. Great job rejecting Leach
Edited on Tue Jan-04-11 06:14 PM by Awsi Dooger
Obviously he botched the interview process again. I read the Washington and Baltimore area papers. The person in charge of the search committee said Edsall stressed ability to adapt style to personnel while "other candidates" (obviously Leach) insisted they would stick to their system regardless of what Maryland's current roster looked like.

Edsall wanted THIS job, a lifelong Maryland fan. Leach was desperate to get ANY job, and that worked against him also, according to the articles.

Edsall's name was frequently mentioned in regard to the Miami job. In the late going he apparently was second choice behind Golden, according to insiders. The two are very similar. Miami picked Golden primarily because he's a decade younger.

I think it's a good hire. Edsall's teams feature a rugged style capable of winning home or road, if the personnel is solid. He's has problems with an overly conservative short passing game but this will be the best young QB he's had.
