Ubaldo Jimenez trade to Cleveland Indians appears imminent

SAN DIEGO — The Colorado Rockies are in serious discussion with the Cleveland Indians in a trade regarding ace Ubaldo Jimenez.

The Rockies are interested in Double-A left-handed starter Drew Pomeranz, 22, who was scratched from his start tonight.

A package would also likely include minor league second baseman Jason Kipnis and Triple-A starter Alex White. The three are considered the Indians' top prospects.

Jimenez was scheduled to start tonight's game for the Rockies vs. the Padres, but he was a late scratch — another indication the deal is close....

I logged on because I heard the ESPN online on my Ps3 and they were talking about the MLB trade deadline and mention Ubaldo. They said they could have a deal and they said Ubaldo was scratched from tonight's start but then I pushed a button and ESPN didn't elaborate further. Anyways, thanks for the news.

9. The Red Sox muddled the trade.

According to a report out of Boston, the Red Sox continued their pursuit of Jimenez near game time, further muddling the strange events. Perhaps distracted by the rumors of his imminent trade, Jimenez pitched to nine Padres in the first inning, walked four and allowed four runs.

3. Why are the Rockies even shopping him.?

Ubaldo is good for 2 more years at only 5 mil per...then they have a team option for 8 mil in 2014. So, they have a guy who throws in the high 90's, has good stuff, and has shown he can be an elite pitcher, under contract for 3 more years at an average of only 6 million..

I'd like to see Jimenez out of the NL West, but I just don't get it..

10. WOW -- I LIKE THIS TRADE!

Team President Mark Shapiro indicated a few years back that 2012 would be Cleveland's year. Okay, he was off the mark a little -- the trades of Sabathia, Lee and Victor Martinez paid quicker dividends than expected. Maybe it's asking too much for them to win the division in 2011 given their injuries, but next year -- provided Jimenez passes his physical -- is looking very, very promising. The Cleveland instructional league turned Sabathia and Lee into Cy Young award-winners and there's no reason to believe they can't do the same with Jimenez.

On edit: Colorado gets some very promising prospects for Ubaldo:

Alex White (RHP): rehabbing a sore right middle finger that he hurt in May making his third start for the Indians. He was 1-0 with 3.60 ERA for the Tribe and 1-0 with a 1.90 ERA in four starts for Class AAA Columbus.

Drew Pomeranz (LHP): started the season at Class A Kinston where he went 3-2 with a 1.87 ERA in 15 starts. He went to Akron and went and was 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA in three starts.

Joe Gardner (RHP): 7-8 with a 4.99 ERA in 19 starts at Akron.

Matt McBride (1st base): hit .297 (92-for-310) with 14 homers and 53 RBI at Akron. He hit .152 (7-for-45) with one homer and three RBI at Columbus.
