Is it commonplace...
for people to go to a baseball game JUST to heckle ONE player? I went to the Nats game Saturday night and had nice close seats to right field to be close to my favorite player, Jayson Werth. There were a whole bunch of beer guzzling guys in front of us, that seemed to have no other purpose but to heckle Werth, despite the fact that the Nats won the game on Werth's 3 run HR. And these were NOT cheap seats either, (mid range at about $40). In this day and age, I just find it surprising people will spend money just to make themselves annoying assholes (cause they were pissing off A LOT of people around me, as it was Werth bobblehead night and he had a lot of fans there).
I ended up having fun, but this kind of behavior is disruptive and does put a damper on the experience of going out to the ballpark. I guess I've been lucky, I've not really seen this before.:(

1. I don't know about these particular guys..
but considering Werth is making 18 mil this year and is hitting only .223, perhaps he deserves to be heckled..

2. Dude, he won the game by scoring ALL the runs that night
Edited on Mon Aug-01-11 08:31 AM by TZ
and they were still heckling him. Also, on the 4th when I went people were heckling him even though he had 3 of the 5 runs scored that night. people are stupid if they heckle players when they are playing well.

Oh and while they were heckling him THE REST OF THE CROWD IN RF gave him a standing ovation. These guys were an embarrassment to the Nats if they are really Nats fans.

3. Many years ago I sat next to a guy in RFK who screamed

at Reggie Jackson the entire game. It was 'You 100,000 dollar bum!' for nine innings. That's right---100,000 dollars was big money back then.

4. LOL
So drunk loud idiots are commonplace then. I've just never had the misfortune to be around them for a game much.
BTW, Werth gave a little girl with a nice JW sign a baseball during the game, it was a really sweet gesture.:)

12. LOL BAAAAAAR-RY
I used to love the way he'd turn and face the fans in left field and hold his arms up in a "bring it on" type of pose.

6. Orioles fans used to do that to Corey Patterson all the time.
"C-Pat" got all kinds of heckles while he patrolled right field. I was at a game where the fans decided to cheer C-Pat for ANY play that happened ANYWHERE on the field. Routine ground ball to 3rd baseman? "Awesome job, C-Pat!" "Great hustle!!"

He took it in great stride. He would look back and smile or tip his cap. I think he knew that the opposing right fielder got it far worse than he ever did.

He was the most heckled player in my childhood. They even made a movie about him.

11. I remember him well--he played here for a season or so
A unique individual, he ran the bases backward for his 100th home run I think. BTW, the worst sports movie ever, for the simple reason that Tony Perkins, as Piersall, threw like a girl.

15. He ran the bases running in reverse. >>

The movie is still highly rated. I haven't seen it in decades.

13. In hockey, it's quite common.
We Kings fans used to boo Rob Blake mercilessly every time he touched the puck.

Kinda funny, too. Sounded almost as if there was an on/off switch.

An approximate equivalent that I can think of from another sport would be Kobe Bryant playing in Denver.

14. It does seem odd, especially for the home team.
I'm tired of the douchebag factor at ball games, which is only getting worse, and it seems to be promoted by the major sports leagues in this country.

16. I heckled Werth a little bit back in April when they played the Phils
but that certainly wasn't the main reason I was there. I'm a little surprised Nats fans would be doing it though.
