Which college team invented the huddle, and why?

Hint: They were a regional power in the East back in the 1930s.

Actually I heard it was to keep the other teams from stealing their signs; prior to this, the practice was for the players to just line up along the line of scrimmage to hear (or see) the play call. Gally's hearing opponents soon realized they could see -- and steal -- the signs, just like in baseball; hence, the circular huddle.
