Browns’ Jackson named AFC’s top defender for month
BEREA, Ohio (AP)—Browns linebacker D’Qwell Jackson(notes) has been selected the AFC’s top defensive player for September.
Jackson, who missed 26 straight games over the past two seasons because of chest injuries, recorded 30 tackles, 2 1/2 sacks, forced a fumble and recovered one in helping the Browns win two of their first three games. Jackson has adjusted well to Cleveland’s new 4-3 defensive scheme.
The Browns’ defense has allowed only five touchdowns this season.
Jackson is the fourth Cleveland player to be selected as the AFC’s top defensive player since the award was established in 1986 and first since Eric Turner in December 1994.
The team has expressed interest in signing the 28-year-old Jackson to a contract extension.

"Billy has done a terrific job in preparing him in this scheme,” Jauron said.
e has a strong desire to get to the football. He can do that and everything goes from there.”
Shurmur agreed.
“In what I’ve learned about him, when it was allowed I was able to visit with him,” he said. “What I learned about him was mostly during training camp. He made very few mistakes. Just being around him you get the idea that he gets things. He gets the world and I am glad he’s having success.”
