U.S. Open Cup supremacy is starting to look much the same for Sounders FC.
In another night of confetti cannons, a raucous record crowd at CenturyLink Field and a postgame news conference interrupted by a rowdy champagne shower, Seattle continued its dominance of the 98-year-old tournament, beating the Chicago Fire in Tuesday's final 2-0 in front of 35,615 fans.
The Sounders have won three Open Cups in the row, the first team to do so since New York Greek-American in 1967-69.
The trophy case is filling up fast.
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/sounders/2016406004_sounders05.htmlThis was really an entertaining match...particularly the second half. Tense as hell, the usual great Sounders fans making noise, everything you want out of a cup final. For awhile it looked like it might be one of those games, Seattle had the majority of the chances, but they'd hit the post twice, and the score still stood 0-0 with always the thought the Fire might nick one.. but once Freddy Montero scored in the 78th minute it was all but over...while Alonso's goal in stoppage time was a celebratory beauty..
The Sounders, only a three year old MLS franchise, are not only the first team in 42 years to accomplishment a 3-peat in this competition, but they have now won more Open Cup titles than all but seven clubs in the tournament's 98 year-history..
The Sounders are also through to the quarterfinals in the CONCACAF Champions League and the hottest team in the MLS. So more silverware may be ahead..
