I hope Steve Bartman is still proud of himself for ruining the Cubs 2003 season
His childish act of insolence and fan interference frazzled the team and caused them to lose Game 6 and the NLCS.

Save for a half-hearted written apology 8 years ago, he has done nothing to show any contrition or grasp that he has done anything wrong.

1. $80 million dollars of players on the field should have been able
to recover from the interference.

If not that game, then in the following game.

30. True....They had several chances to close out that series
and went into the bag...

Turning Bartman into some kind of lightning rod took a very special, unique kind of cowardice from the fanbase and Chicago media...

10. Bartman DID NOT ruin the season.
Edited on Thu Oct-06-11 07:33 PM by bluestate10
If you watch the video carefully, you will see that the field player had no chance to catch that ball unless his arm could extend both out and up a foot and a half in each dimension. Plus, the infield of the Cubs blotched a double play ball that would have ended the Marlin's biggest inning WITHOUT a run being scored. History will be kinder to Bartman as time move on. Bartman should do himself a favor and move to a real city that has real baseball fans, and players.

34. The Marlins scored 8 runs that inning
That supposed catch would have been 1 out. What about Alex Gonzalez?? No-one ever mentions him. He gets a pass and he was on the field. Bartman was doing what everyone else in the stands did that stood next to him - tried to catch the ball. He wasn't the only one there. I saw the video. There were 3 other guys going for the ball - that was a FOUL BALL. Alou tried to get angry because he didn't catch a ball that was clearly out of his reach.

11. Although, Moises Alou later tried to play it off as a joke,
in '08 he claimed he wouldn't have caught the ball anyway. Alex Gonzalez's error had more to do with the Cub's loss. Plus, there was always game 7. Or blame Bartman, he's an easy target.

I watched 2003 unfold before my eyes. Went to Game 3 of the NLDS (best baseball game I've ever been to in person) and Game 4 of the NLCS. What a team!

16. Draw a circle around everyone reaching for the ball and you have the Olympic Rings.
The guy sitting to the right of Bartman got over bigtime. After the play, Chicago fans showed how classy they are. After that, I'm glad the cubbies lost.

Sing along with me... There's ALWAYS... toMORROW...

19. I'm guessing you are forgetting the sarcasm tag, right? (Psst...the Cubs lost to the better team)
Edited on Thu Oct-06-11 08:10 PM by Tommy_Carcetti
All Steve Bartman did was what 40,000 other people in that stadium would have done if they were sitting in his seat. And what did he get? Beer thrown at him, death threats, people chanting "Asshole" at him, people shouting at him to go kill himself, etc.

After seeing the ESPN documentary after that sad incident, my opinion of Cubs fans plummeted to those of Yankee fans (who treated Jeffrey Maier as some sort of hero for doing the exact same thing, except he helped the home team). After what they did to Steve Bartman, they deserve to see the Cubs go another 100 years without a World Series title.

Cubs fans need to realize that the Florida Marlins were a superior team with a never say die attitude (see Games 3 and 4 of the NLDS against the Giants and Game 4 of the World Series against the Yankees). They were simply a better team than the Cubs, plain and simple. Sorry to burst your little bubble about that.

Lovable losers, my ass. Enjoy the next 100 years.

29. While I Agree That Bartmann Didn't Cost Them The Game. . .
. . .i don't agree with you about the 40,000 people doing the same thing. I personally avoided a foul ball so a player could catch it just down from the visitors' dugout at Wrigley. And, you'll see it all the time on TV. Home fans getting out of the way of a home player trying to make a catch is commonplace.

So, i do think he forgot he was a home fan. Lots of people don't forget and get out of the way.

It's still an open question as to whether Alou would have actually been able to catch that ball.
