Though you got me, I was pretty cynical this past week, but some time out on the town really improved my mood.

Bats struggle as Sox fall in Baltimore
Renteria drives in the lone run; Damon extends hit streak
By David Selig / MLB.com

BALTIMORE -- Wade Miller labored in his final start before the All-Star break as the Red Sox dropped a 9-1 decision to the Orioles on Saturday afternoon before a sellout crowd of 49,331 at Camden Yards.

Rafael Palmeiro drove in six runs -- including a 350-foot homer off Miller in the third inning. Palmeiro's blast came after David Ortiz was robbed of his own three-run homer in the top of the frame. With two out, Ortiz sent a deep fly toward the Orioles' bullpen in left-center field, but Baltimore center fielder Luis Matos snagged the ball with his arm hanging about three feet over the wall.

4. The O's were playing crazy defense today.
Where the hell was that when they were playing the Yanks the other week?

Good highlights (if you're a O's fan anyway) at http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=250709101

At least the Yankees lost today. :)

5. no amount of defense
would have saved the O's against the Yanks the way we were pounding that pitching staff.

8. O's take the final game
Edited on Sun Jul-10-05 07:47 PM by SpiralHawk

Oh, oh - things are getting tight. It's going to be a doozy of a second half. Now to switch to All Star ball caps, and pull together as a team to beat the National League and gain home field advantage for the World Series.

Red Sox end first half on losing note
Damon beats out bunt single in ninth to extend hitting streak
By David Selig / MLB.com

BALTIMORE -- As the Red Sox packed their bags to leave for the All-Star break following Sunday's 4-1 loss to the Orioles, the team displayed some frustration. But the general mood in the clubhouse was a quiet sense of accomplishment for being able head into the All-Star break in first place for the first time since 1995.

Sunday's game, however, demonstrated the small margin of error the Sox will have down the stretch with the Orioles and Yankees breathing down Boston's neck in the American League East standings.

The Orioles hit two home runs off Tim Wakefield knuckleballs, and the Sox had a pair of balls carom from their gloves at costly moments, as the O's won the series before a record crowd of 49,828 at Camden Yards.

"We're definitely disappointed that we lost three of four," said Johnny Damon, who extended his hitting streak to 25 games with a bunt single to lead off the ninth inning. " they really didn't outslug us ... we just didn't hit a good pitcher today."

13. I cant decide who I want to lose that series
Like sure I could be a Yankee hater and say I want the Sox to win, but I want to get first place back, to tell you the truth, it would be best if you guys split that four games series after we get back from the break.

14. As a benefit to the O's? Of course.
I was talking about the likelyhood of 10-9 slugfests where the BP gets used up.

15. I may even prefer the Yankees taking it 3-1
since I think that would enable us being 2 games out of first right now to make some gains. I dont know really, like thats the problem, I want to gain ground on the Sox of course but I want some breathing room in case we struggle in our series. I guess it all depends on how the Orioles play, if they play well, I guess I want the Yankees to do well that series, if they dont, I Want the Sox. All in stragetic reasoning.

16. Schedule favors Bosox from what I can see
Yanks have 3 west coast trips left and I understand the O's have 2 but the Bosox have only 1. After the Bosox the Yanks have 3 at Texas, 3 at Anaheim, 3 home each against Minn & the Angels to round out July.

It doesn't get much easier in August and in late September the Yanks and O's have 2 four game series against each other while the Yanks only play Boston 2 more times, the last 2 games of the year.

17. Yeah we got it harder than they do the last two months
It should get interesting, I would not be surprised if its the last week of the season where all the pieces of the puzzle fall in to place.
