Marquez was robbed tonight ....
Edited on Sun Nov-13-11 01:49 AM by doublethink
hahaha ... and I'm a big Pacman fan, and not the only Pacman fan in my house that saw it that way. I had it 115 to 113 Marquez but whatever. My money is definitely on Floyd now after what I saw tonight, no question. I think any reservations Floyd had before tonight should be put aside and he of anybody will sleep easy. Good fight tonight anyway for a pure boxing chess match.

And that Cain, Dos Santos thing on Fox ... geesh ... a Dana White Nightmare ... 64 seconds ... hahaha.

on edit: Styles Make Fights ... and Marquez gives Manny headaches, could tell Marquez watched a lot of films of Manny too, was beyond prepared for him. Very surprising.

1. Hard to say he was robbed
If you change 1 round, it's a draw.

I had it 115-113 Pacquiao. A lot of rounds were razor close, and Pacquiao's slight edge in activity won him the majority of those.

2. Well I'm not the only one sayin this ....
and was being generous to Pacquiao in this fight with my score, like I said I'm a Pacquiao fan .... but don't think his activity was effective. Anyway it was fun, least it went the distance ... unlike that UFC fight 64 seconds ... that was a tragedy. The Clay Guida vs Ben Henderson fight in the prelims not on Fox was a Classic ... they should of put that one one of Fox ...

7. Watching a rebroadcast with English ... AKA British ...
announcers .... and it's pretty funny. Amar Khan good friend of Manny's (spar together) thought he lost the fight. The other announcers are saying we are all hypnotized with Manny Disease ... and are being as blunt as an englishman can be Marquez was robbed. "I'll be staggered if there isn't a review of that fight" they are saying .... investigated etc bla bla bla Too funny.
Entertaining anyway ....

15. The British angle makes sense
Many will claim that their judges are more nuanced and "sophisticated", while Americans tend to favor the guy moving forward and throwing more.

I don't think it takes a "review" to see that the fight was very close, and now for 36 rounds the judges clearly favor Pacquiao's methods for whatever reason.

I can tell you, watching this year of boxing with Agbeko/Mares, Williams/Lara, Hopkins/Dawson, this was no travesty of justice.

3. I only watched the UFC on Fox tonight.
The only access I had to the Pacquiao fight was the (almost live) round by round analysis by Michael Martinez on the Fox sports website, and Martinez was giving almost every round to Marquez. Lots of booing when Pacquiao got the descision, I understand.

The UFC on Fox was a substantial letdown. No full fight card and only the main event being televised was my main gripe of the evening. I was not aware of that when tuning in at first. It's a shame, because the co-main event between Clay Guida and Ben Henderson was a pretty epic fight. Yeah, the main event was over after 64 seconds; a fight that was supposed to be a battle.

You could tell Dana White was pretty pissed afterwards.

5. Yup. I'm nothing if not redundant...
I was writing as you were posting.

Thankfully, the next coming UFC's on Fox will be the real deal, full card events (a seven year deal, I understand). This was apparently just a taste tonight.

6. Cool least they got their foot in the door ....
I thought of the possibility of a quick fight when I found out it was only a 1 fight broadcast. Wanted it to be a classic .... but Dana set himself up for this .... even just the Guida - Henderson fight prior would of really made it 1000 times better. Live and learn.

8. One thought:
Pac Man vs Mayweather: each fighter stands to make $75 - 100 million; promoters etc will make more.

Marquez vs Mayweather II: would not sell.

Could that decision have gone any other way?

12. Excelent Thought.
Hey H20 Man, would like to hear your thoughts on 'Compubox' in general if and when you have time. See posts 10 and 11 in this thread, just curious on your insight. Peace.

13. "Compubox"
is an interesting concept, which is often inaccurate and frequently misleading. Three things make it so: first, human error in counting punches, which increases when fighters are fast; second, body punches are often overlooked (as they are with too many judges; and third, despite the "power punches" catagory, it really doesn't measure the effectiveness of various blows. (A classic example would be George Foreman's jab, which was definitely powerful.) I place very little value on it.

9. I thought Pacquiao won 115-113.

It wouldn't have been a robbery if the fight was judged the other way 115-113, as there were a few very close rounds.

10. Compubox stats- Manny threw and landed more punches, and landed more power shots.

http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/11/13/11/compubox-shows-pacquiao-landed-more-shots

From that article:

In the final statistics, it shows that Pacquiao threw more shots (578) than Marquez (435).

Pacquiao connected with 176 punches (30%), while Marquez landed 138 (32%).

The jabs thrown favors Pacquiao, who connected with 59 of 304 jabs thrown, while Marquez connected with 38 of 182 jabs thrown.

Marquez was more efficient, however, connecting 21% of his jabs while Pacquiao connected 19%.

Pacquiao has the lead in power punches, connecting on 117 of 274 attempts or 43%, while Marquez connected on 100 of 254 power punches thrown or 39%.

Per round, Pacquiao threw 49 punches and landed 14, while Marquez threw 36 punches and landed 11.

11. The old compubox thingy ...
This is what was posted in another boxing chat room in taking compubox with a grain of salt ...

"Since when is boxing based on Total punches landed for the entire fight. Boxing is a round by round scoring, based on a 10 point must system. Compubox doesn't reflect the whole fight."

The guy gave some off the wall analogy like what if boxer 'A' threw 500 punches in one round, and Boxer 'B' only threw 10. Then Boxer 'B' went on to decisively win the rest of the rounds but in the end Boxer A's punch count was 650 and Boxer B's punch count was 450 total. Who won?
hahaha

Anyway he broke it down category by category and doesn't agree compubox should be used in the pros only armature boxing .. olympics and such. To much to all remember now, but had a point. Anyway thanks for the stats !
