What's the best/worst trade your team ever made?
I'm a Red Sox fan, so we can assume the Babe Ruth deal as an absolute.

Beyond that, the worst trade I can remember was when we gave away Jeff Bagwell for a bag of hammers and some loam.

The best trade I can remember is when we got Jason Veritek and Derek Lowe from Seattle, and in that trade Seattle got the immortal Heathcliff Slocumb.

You?

1. We let you guys get Johnny Damon.
And let the Mets get Carlos Beltran. Yeah, Damon's got a rag for an arm. But I cant even remember who we got for them. Or Germaine Dye.

2. Cavs trading Ron Harper in 1989 for Danny Ferry
Edited on Fri Jul-29-05 08:01 PM by sph812
The trade was non-basketball related. The Cavs said that Harper was hanging with the "wrong crowd," which wasn't true. The word is that Harper was having an affair with Gordon Gund's daughter, but I don't know whether that is true or not. And as everyone knows, Ferry turned out to be not nearly what he was projected as a second pick (however, I do feel that Ferry will be a very good GM).

Michael Jordan once said that nobody defended him better than Ron Harper. Had the Cavs still had Harper in 1992 when they made the Eastern Conference Finals and lost to the Bulls, I think they would have beaten Chicago. Harper would have neutralized Jordan (but not necessarily stop him) to the point that the Cavs would not have had to double team him. Therefore, the Cavs could guard the other Bulls players and take them out of the game.

..though not my team.

Trading your CF and a relief pitcher for a 2nd baseman you are going to convert to CF is a bad idea even if Samuel didn't stink up the joint.

Edited on Fri Jul-29-05 08:15 PM by longship
True! Bunning was the worst trade. Detroit Tigers gave him up and he went to the NL and pitched a perfect game. Great pitcher, not so good Senator.

19. I dunno . . . in the last few years, the Yanks have traded away . . .
a LOT of young talent, many of whom are already making noise with other teams (e.g. Nick Johnson, that catcher with the odd name, etc.) . . . it's too early to determine what the long term will look like, but it's entirely possible that some of these trades will be right up there on the "worst list" in the future . . .

no doubt. Probably the deals of the decade in pro basketball.

Amazing trades that couldn't have been pulled off by anyone other than Rod Thorn, the best GM in pro sports.

17. for the Colorado Rockies, who are only "my team"
insofar as they inhabit the same city... any trade the idiot GM Dan O'Dowd has ever made, up to and including trading Shawn Chacon for two minor leaguers yesterday.

Fortunately he traded him to my favorite team, so all is not lost.

18. As a Vikings fan do I even have to say the worst? Herschel Walker.
...without a doubt, one of the worst trades in NFL history....

"The Vikings would make what would be considered its biggest blunder in team history. On October 12, 1989, the Vikings acquired Herschel Walker from Dallas for Issiac Holt, David Howard, Darrin Nelson, Jesse Solomon, Alex Stewart, a first-round choice in 1992, conditional 1st-round choices in 1990 and '91, conditional 2nd-round choices in 1990, '91 and '92, and a conditional 3rd-round choice in 1992. The final result of the trade gave the Vikings Walker, a 3rd (Mike Jones), 5th (Reggie Thornton) and 10th-round choice (Pat Newman) in 1990 and a 3rd-round choice in 1991 (Jake Reed), while Dallas received all 5 players, a 1st, 2nd and 6th-round choice in 1990, a 1st and 2nd-round choice in 1991 and a 1st, 2nd and 3rd-round choice in 1992."

I remember Herschel's first game -- he broke off a 40 yard run (and his shoe came off) on about his 3rd carry. I was excited at the possibilites of him carrying the Vikes for years. Boy, was I let down... :spank:

20. Ozzie Smith for Garry "If I ain't startin', I ain't departin'" Templeton
Garry was a better offensive player, and a pretty damned good shortstop, but after flipping off the fans the Cards ran his ass out of town on a rail. Ozzie came to town, and the Cards took off.

Of course the Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio theft is legendary as well. *snicker*

21. The Mariners traded Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe for Heathcliff Slocumb
Edited on Sat Jul-30-05 10:22 AM by HuckleB
Yup, Red Sox fans can offer up a little bit of thanks to goofball Seattle management for helping them to their World Series title, IMHO.

Next up would be the Mariners dumping Carlos Guillen to the Tigers for, well, something to help keep the M's in the cellar for a few years. Sheesh.

Duquette's finest hour- even before I realized that one of these guys would become the captain and my pretend boyfriend.

27. We did get Jamie Moyer from the Sox for Darren Bragg though
That was a pretty sweet deal.

I think the Guillen deal is far and away worse than the Varitek/Lowe deal. At least with that trade the M's were making a move to try and win a division.

Guillen was given away in the offseason for NOTHING. Totally brutal deal.

29. As for best with the Orioles, sorry I am late
but without a doubt, Jack Baldshun and Milt Pappas for Frank Robinson, Robbie gets a triple crown his first year in Baltimore and the O's sweep the Dodgers in the series. To see those kinda years again sigh. And anyhow about Schilling wasnt he brought up by Boston too, I know we had him then the Stros did, then the Phills, and then the DBacks, and now hes in Boston.

31. Worst: Lou Brock to our hated rivals
for washed up Ernie Broglio. The best? Quite possibly when the Cubs acquired Larry Bowa and some guy named Ryne Sandberg from Philadelphia for Ivan DeJesus and others. Sandberg is rightfully being inducted into the HoF today and DeJesus is...well I don't really know where he is now. Not the Hall of Fame.
Another great trade for the Cubs was getting Ferguson Jenkins from the Phillies for some guy or guys whose name I can't even remember. Wonder if the Phillies have anyone else they want to deal?

34. He whose name must not be mentioned: Sean Gilbert
Edited on Mon Aug-01-05 03:33 AM by dad
I'm more into fantasy sports than following actual teams.
Probably the result of only having one real team in town (Crackalacka Panthers).

For the Panties, obviously the Sean Gilbert trade was legendarily bad.
Gilbert said it was a spiritual thing - Sean had a revelation from God that the Redskins should pay him the figure of $5 million. So he held out and the Panties gave WAS TWO #1's, one of which was the #5 overall which was traded for N.O.'s entire draft to get Ricky Williams.
Keep in mind that Gilbert for nothing would have been a bad trade, considering how mediocre he was and how bad he wrecked our salary cap.

The worst fantasy trade I ever did was my first one, when I traded Emmitt Smith (he was talking about holding out the entire season) for Randall Cunningham (I was desperate for a QB). Well I made the trade and boom - Emmitt signed and went on to score like 24 TDs, and Cunningham instantly broke his leg. I had to go that whole season with Trent Dilfer - in his rookie season with the Tampa Bay Bucs - as QB.

I've had my share of good trades too. This season I traded Edgardo Alfonzo and Jeff Bagwell at just the right time and got Mark Buerhle and some other scrubs.
