Favre Says He's Been Cheating Himself
Favre comes into camp in better shape

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - Brett Favre spent the offseason determined to unburden his heavy heart and beefy body.

He didn't throw a football until July and was excused from both minicamps as he and his wife Deanna dealt with her recovery from breast cancer and the grief of her brother's death in an all-terrain vehicle accident at the couple's home last October.

After deciding in March to return for a 15th NFL season, Favre was determined to get into better physical shape. He said the average fan may not have noticed but he did: he'd been cutting corners.

"From the outside looking in, you don't notice those things because it may have been just five or six plays," Favre said Tuesday. "So, I wanted to have a little more stamina and really within a five-yard box, be quicker. Because as bad as I hate to admit it, age is working against me as it works against everyone. But in my profession, if you can help it, you can't afford to be slow. Not one step.

"I just felt like the last few years, I worked out but I didn't put in as much effort. Whereas when I was 22, I could just get away with it. So, I feel better but we'll see what happens. I mean, there's no guarantees. It's hard to throw for 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns in good shape or in bad shape."

On the morning after the Packers' playoff loss to Minnesota, Favre had a talk with his position coach, Darrell Bevell, who told him that as great as he was, he could do a lot of things better.

2. Why?
He's still a productive quarterback, especially if he's improved his conditioning.

3. A guy that competitive
won't retire until the bitter end. Favre is going to end up being his own worst enemy. He is still productive though. He's tough as nails, doesn't miss games and commands total respect from his teammates. If he does take better care of himself he's a got a few more years left in him. But, well see......

10. insane

he set an all-time packer record for yards passed last season with 4,000+. 30 TDs, etc., etc.

anyone familiar with the man's work last season wouldn't have said that.

4. Favre always scares me
Last couple years moreso than in the past he just does stupid stuff. Doesn't think before he runs or throws.

This season isn't looking to good for a Packers fan in Minnesota.

5. he's started to just gun it alot
It's hard for him to compensate for some of the tools you lose with age. He has a tendency to rifle stuff when he's out of control now. 10 years ago he was quick enough to have that half a step or so to give him time to make plays. He can still make plays, don't get me wrong, he's just not superman anymore. Jake Plummer is another one who does that. He'll just look like he throws something in the air for no reason sometime, lol.

9. Favre's biggest problem this year will be lack of protection.
The starting O-line isn't very impressive. Brett & Pack fans should be worried if one them gets hurt.

17. Are they selling...
Are they selling a purple thumbs down yet? I think you could make millions off of them right now.

Last week the Pack looked worse than the Vikes... this week I think the Vikes won

13. "...He's an interception machine..."
And Culpepper isn't? Mark my words, without Moss, Culpepper's stats will not anywhere near as good. Favre makes recievers better as opposed to the other way around.

19. What I find interesting
What I find the most interesting about this whole story is the part about him talking with Darrell Bevell. What the hell can Darrell Bevell tell him about playing QB. Now for those who don't know Bevell was Wisconsin's QB in '93 when they won the Rose Bowl for the first time. Now his job was basically to hand the ball off and get out of the way. So how do you figure that he could tell Brett Favre anything on how to play the QB position.
