I'm a S. Carolina grad, and although I love animals and support protecting them, this is stupid. IT'S A MASCOT PEOPLE! A dude wearing a big cartoon-like suit. There aren't actual gamecocks fighting at the games!

Actually, USC adopted the gamecock as their mascot in honor of Revolutionary War hero Thomas Sumter who folks called "The Gamecock" because of his aggressive style in battle. It's not an endorsement of cock fighting.

Before long, we'll just have to name high school, college and pro teams after colors or something. It's a bit ridiculous IMO.
