6. college football is better in my opinion because...

the upsets do not occur every year or every week, but when they do, they are something to remember. Besides, the NFL players are getting paid to win, they are expected to win. College players are not getting paid, it is for bragging rights. So when the huge upset occurs, it is something to remember for all times.

Ok you don't like football that is fair enough, so why in the hell are you posting in a football thread? the question was what do you like better college or pro football? Not do you like football? it's best to ask questions about football in the football group where people who don't care won't clutter up the thread.

For the record, like most Nebraskan's I prefer the college game.

feel as if they have to tell you about it, all the time? We had a neighbor we invited to a Super Bowl party once and she couldn't just politely decline, they had to make it clear that "Polly hates football!" It helps to have a consistent contender for the National title with cross town rivals and a lot of other teams setting up their best shot for them games. I really don't like USC but it's neat to see all the talent they have stockpiled

14. When I realized Frank Solich had to go:

2 years ago, we were in the middle of a 10-3 season, but Texas really put an asskicking on us. You guys were just clearly so much better than we were, especially talent wise. It was obvious we were never going to be an elite team again with Frank. We're looking much better this year. I think by the time the horns and huskers play next year we will be able to give you a good game. btw, I think this is the year for beating Oklahoma.

Not trying to be combative but to me it was clear Nebraska was a by far more poorly coached last year then they ever were under Frank Solich. Steve Pederson is a snake oil salesman far more full of himself than Nebraska. IF this things gets turned around Pedey will be gone faster then you can blink to greener pastures. His main objective is Steve Pederson not a Nebraska resurgence. If things don't turn around thankfully we will put his ass on the first train out of town. Or maybe it will be the plane he sent down to Arkansas to buy off Houston Nutt that he will be riding.

20. Yeah, last year got a bit ugly

Last year, Joe Daily and our receivers were flat out horrible. The offense is going to be vastly better with Zach Taylor and more experienced receivers. Personally I think the defense will be about the same, but my friend swears up and down it will be much better also. I think 8-3 is pretty reasonable, with a good chance to go to the big XII championship.

9. Actually, the college football we see on TV is pro football --

they just don't openly pay the athletes for performing. Think of it: no big salaries for the players, big TV coverage, major popularity -- and most football programs still can't pay for themselves. But, hey, how else could they have pro teams in places like South Bend, IN, Stillwater, OK, or Clemson, SC?

Most colleges coaches don't know what the fuck they're doing, see Glen Mason for a prime example...particularly his coaching decisions vs. Michigan the past 2 years.

I'd rather watch High School football than College football.

Pro is just that. Professional. Any team can beat any team on any given day. See Miami defeating New England last year. Way more exciting than USC dominating everyone.

I watch a lot of both, but keeping up with dozens of games on a Saturday, watching the different rivalries, that's what make college ball better.

It has the rituals, the tradition behind it. I choke up every time the Michigan Marching Band pours onto the field, fists pumping, instruments raised, into their block M formation and launch into the M Fanfare while the drum major runs out, does his traditional backband so the plume on his hat touches the ground, then springs up and leads the band down the field in The Victors. And then the team running out under the Go Blue banner, every one of them leaping up to touch it, even the coaches. Goodness, I'm getting a little teary thinking of it. I can't wait until the season starts, less than two weeks now!

You never see that kind of emotion in the pros.

But I beg to differ. There's tradition in pro football, too. We just don't see much of it in Michigan. Take a trip to Green Bay, Chicago or Cleveland. Lots of tradition in those cities(Pittsburgh and Baltimore, too. It's not the marching band thing(well, it is in Baltimore), but the tail-gating parties and spontanaiety of cheering from the stands(GO Pack GO!). It's the Dog Pound and the Terrible Towel.

Bob Ufer made me a Meeecheegan fan in the '70's. I rarely miss a game(on radio or tv, that is) no matter who the opponet is. I follow the Spartans, too. But when Georgia plays Auburn, I could care less. When the Bengals play the Cardinals, though, I'm interested. It's a higher level of play and I know who most of the players are.

But that's just me. :shrug:

With the exception of a few schools like Syracuse, BC and Penn State, there is no big time college football in the northeast. I like football I can go see in person and that's the Giants for me plus an Army game whenever I get the chance because good or bad (which they are most of the time) their games are an experience.

35. Pro, But Not By As Much As I Used To

I HATE(!!!!!) the wishbone and veer. It's boring football that is predicated on the team with the biggest linemen winning. The defensive strategies devised to combat it were equally boring "bend don't break" concepts. It's tedious.


But, now that many more colleges are using pro-sets and the QB's and wideouts are actually the offensive triggers, it's better than it used to be.

But, i still prefer pro football by a substantial margin. Maybe if i had gone to universities that had football teams, it'd be different, but baseball, basketball, track, golf, etc. were all they had at the schools i went to. (Except for one, which is a Big Ten school, but i was in the grad school when i was in my late 30's. Not exactly the rah-rah time of life.)

The competitive imbalance in college football makes it hard to get excited about most of the games, unless you have a team in the national championship hunt. I don't need to see (insert pretty much anyone) beat up on Temple week in and week out. In pro football, on the other hand, anyone can beat anyone.

fight songs and watching 100+ year old rivalries for Old Oaken Buckets and such. When a nobody team nips one of the top dogs, the feeling cannot be matched by any NFL upset.

ball, it sometimes looks like Pop Warner. I want to watch the best, not usuallly incompetent college kids who are hoping the computer spits out a ruling in their favor. Plus, in the pros anyone can win on any given Sunday, but a Top 25 team playing against the Hoopertown Fighting Accounting Majors and amassing a 49-0 halftime lead is not going to keep me interested.

And these bowl games SUCK. The Papermate Bowl, the Twix Twin Bar Bowl, the Tampax Bowl and all that other bullshit - why do people even watch, much less go? No more than two bowl games mean anything, and usually it's one.

I always have a hard time with this one. I think in the end I like Pro-Football better as an overall "product" for lack of a better term. I certainly would watch the ND-Michigan or OSU-Texas game over any of the pro games this week, but overall I prefer the NFL playoofs to the bowl season. It is pretty close, but I will go with the NFL.

48. College football is about a billion times more interesting and meaningful

Come on, college football defines entire regions and theories. It's basically your home grown talent against that of other states and regions. Just look at the damn rosters. Overflowing with players from that locale for the most part. Plus the styles of play are so much more varied and intriguing than the pros. Granted, not as much as in the '60s to '80s because the college teams have ignorantly abandoned the option-oriented attacks that were so glorious to watch. The rivalries are beyond anything the NFL can even approximate, once a year and generally alternating home and home. That one game can make or break a season regardless of what happens the other 10 games. In many cases the coaches are alumni of the schools themselves. Then you have the pressurized aspect of every game a virtual must-win for teams aspiring for a title.

I attended the Miami/FSU game a week ago. Every play was life and death while rooting for the Canes, even though I went to USC, not Miami. Then I went to Miami/Denver on Sunday and basically just sat there and rooted for the Dolphins. No emotional attachment whatsoever. The pros game is so random, drafting player X simply because player Y was picked two spots earlier. A boring mismash of players from throughout the country, and now with ridiculous free agency and salary cap realities they don't even stay long. It's become a copycat league with almost zero variety in formation or emphasis. The same coaches get recycled.

Today Texas is playing Rice. Why would I want to watch that? Sure, there's the occasionaly out-of-the-blue upset, but the 65-3 results are much more common.

-to me, the crowds seem more organized and intensely focused on the game.

-I prefer the sound of marching bands to canned music.

-the cheerleaders actually lead cheers, not just squirm around in scant attire.

-the talent level is such that overachievers can still come from out of nowhere to have a big day. In the NFL, everybody's an elite level athlete.

-the variety of offenses and defenses you see from team to team. There's much more similarity between the systems used by the NFL.

-the pageantry and quirkiness of tradition.
