49ers lineman dies after game
CAUSE NOT REVEALED; HERRION, 23, COLLAPSED IN LOCKER ROOM

By Dennis Georgatos

DENVER - 49ers guard Thomas Herrion died Saturday night after collapsing in the locker room following a 26-21 exhibition loss to the Denver Broncos, a team official said.

The cause of death was not disclosed, and it was not clear what led to Herrion's collapse. The 6-foot-3, 315-pound Herrion, 23, was taken on a gurney into an ambulance. A medic administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation as Herrion was lifted into the ambulance, which took him to St. Anthony's Central Hospital.

``We received word a short time later that he had passed away,'' said club spokesman Aaron Salkin, reading from a prepared statement. ``This is a colossal tragedy for the 49ers and the entire NFL community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Herrion family.''

Coach Mike Nolan informed the team of Herrion's death at the airport as the 49ers were heading home, Salkin said.

3. How warm was it in Denver during the game?
Heat seems to have more of a deleterious effect on the larger players. A little over 4 years ago, Korey Stringer died of heat stroke because of training in the extreme August heat.

6. R.I.P. Thomas Herrion
and for goodness' sake, Niners, please do not make this the "Thomas Herrion Memorial 0-16 Season". Please.

The Niners' preseason games are telecast out here, but after they gave up that cheesy long pass to Denver's eighth-string receiver, I clicked off, and so didn't hear until this morning.

7. This Is Terrible News
Even if god forbid there was something in his system, I don't want to here how somehow a 23 year old deserved this. It's a horrible tragedy.
