20. Frankly I think Al Michaels is way overrated
Only reason he is where he is today is the fact that he called the "Miracle on Ice".

22. Very true.
He just *has* to do some Cosell imitation on just about every broadcast, plus a slam on a Democrat.

Plus, he's just not that great at play-by-play. Give me Mike Patrick of ESPN's Sunday Night crew, or Mike Tirico. Both of those guys kick ass.

2. I'd rather listen to Madden ramble
than Michaels make another lame Clinton slam.

4. I love Big John...
Sure he repeats himself in the same sentence, makes very little sense for long periods of time, and generally doesn't seem interested in anything that's not 100 yards long, and full of guys in pads, but come on....

If given the choice of riding across country with John Madden and Al Michaels, I'd take the bus everytime.

18. Michaels is a 49er ass kisser
Give me anyone but him (well, maybe not. Musburger drives me nuts on college games).

Good grief, I thought I was the only one driven crazy by him. He RUINS the games he's calling.

13. what I like
is that they don't spew the same crap that ESPN does. They actually do their own research. And they are very entertaining. Lots of good shows on NFL Radio. The Opening Drive is very good as well. Tim Kirwan is great as well.

14. I don't hear The Opening Drive much any more.
I'm never up that early, and I work a lot of 2nd shifts so I miss the replay. Do you mean Pat Kirwan or Tim Ryan? Like both of those guys, too. Not a fan of Chris Carter at all! It'd be easy to point to his OSU and Vikes history(U of Meeecheegan and the Packers are my teams), but I just find the guy a little disingenuous. I got no feelings on Shannon Sharpe. He does the job, I guess.

BTW, thanks again for setting me straight on Steinbrenner. I leapt before I looked.

15. I like both Kirwan and Ryan
that show is on after the opening drive, which has Dan Reeves and Bob Papa. I agree about Carter. Carl Banks does a grat job when he's on. I don't like Sharpe. I feel he just wants to hear himself talk.

Sorry for assuming bad intent on your Steinbrenner post. I shouldn't have done that.

16. A Carl Banks story
Carl isn't on enough, so I tend to forget about him . I agree, he does an excellent job.

Back in '83(I won't use terms like "young cuss and "whippersnapper", promise) I was a feshman at Michigan State. In November we got our first snow, 3"-4" deep, and wet. It was perfect snowball material. I lived in Brody Complex, a group of 6 dorms, and snowball fights started breaking out, 1 dorm vs. another, then the dorms forming up alliances. Finally someone got the idea that all of Brody should form up, cross the Red Cedar River, and attack South Complex.

South Complex happened to house, among others, the football team. I was in the vanguard of Brody-ites who started attacking Wilson-Wonders dorm. We'd gotten off a few volleys and were getting a reaction from the W-W residents- cursing us out through the windows. After a couple minutes a door opened, and guess who walked out?

Carl Banks has been a large man since he was 8. I have been getting smaller since I was 5. Carl , standing 10 feet in front of me, glared and bellowed,"KNOCK IT THE HELL OFF!! Some of us are studying." We stopped. There was some mumbling from the Brody folks which sounded like,"Yes, Carl , you're right, homework is important, we're very sorry." As we turned to leave, we heard,"Thank you." And the door closed.

It snowed again the next day. Brody and South students clashed the bridge over the Red Cedar. Carl Banks was nowhere to be found. Brody won the day, following the South kids back to their homes. I figure Carl was at the library.

17. Neat
I'm a Giants fan and Carl is one my favorite former Giants. He was such a good player. He was so good in 86. What a smart, talented player.

7. Why can't football find decent announcers
Baseball has them beat all to hell in that regard. And unlike football, former bb players turned announcers -- like Joe Morgan and Tony Gwynn -- are articulate, intelligent and intelligible.

When Madden and Michaels are on I have to turn down the sound. Michael Irvin, especially, can barely speak English (badly). Collinsworth, Long and Esiason are okay, though, and espn has some good ones.
