Gooden allegedly drove away from police after being stopped on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. He had been seen weaving his car in downtown Tampa, and after handing over his licence, refused a sobriety test. He left soon after.
The 41-year-old Gooden has a long history of alcohol and substance abuse, and was currently on bail for a domestic abuse charge. Despite early success in his career, including the 1985 Cy Young Award, Gooden had been in and out of trouble with the law.
