San Antonio Makes Moves to Take Care of the Saints
By Sam Farmer, Times Staff Writer

A city councilman in San Antonio said Thursday that the Alamodome has cleared almost all of the necessary dates to play host to each of this season's eight home games of the New Orleans Saints, displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

"The citizens of San Antonio are ready to offer their facilities in all availability to the New Orleans Saints organization," Councilman Roger Flores said in a telephone interview. "I know there are one or two date conflicts that, understanding the dynamics of the situation, could be addressed and we could move forward in a positive direction."

....

By allowing the Saints to use the 66,000-seat Alamodome, Flores said, the city can "provide that sense of pride that sports franchises often have, and give the citizens of New Orleans and Louisiana that needed energy boost they will have to rely on to get through the next few weeks."

2. there will be tens of thousands of evacuees in SA
Maybe it will cheer them up a bit to see the Saints play. I am not a football fan, but I am a human being who understands how important continuity is psychologically. So many people have lost everything. A football team may not be that important in the grand scheme of things, but the fact that they will continue might provide the residents of the refugee shelters some hope that New Orleans will return to normal.

3. Why post this in the SPORTS folder?
If it were any other folder, then that's fine. But why here? You know that sports related subject are going to be the focus here. So why flip out about it? Just asking.

4. Sports was a big part of the recovery in NY after 9-11
I expect the same will be true here. The Yankees run in 2001 even though it ended in a loss, provided a great distraction and definitely aided in the healing process. People don't want to wallow in misery. They want some continuance of normalcy. Its vital to the healing process.
