Kansas City Royals will probably lose their 100th game today
Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 05:35 PM by enigami
Playing a double header with Detroit. If not today, this week. This will be their 3rd 100 season loss in 4 years. A new record I think for an established franchise.

Sad to see what this once proud franchise has become. Royals fans ( I grew up one ) You can vent here.

1. Goddammit!
I wear my Royals colors proudly, and get constant flack for it. My position is this: they were my team when they were great, and they're still my team. I held out with the Chiefs through the miserable 80's in the same way.

3. Same way with the St. Louis Cardinals.
I will always wear the hat even they're 102-60 or 60-102. I don't guve a flying rip.

The Cards have been pretty good for, what, the last 10 or more years?
I love the rivalry. Just wish there was more to it than re-playing 1985.

7. No. . . they've done well since about 97 or so. . .
They were good through the 80s, died near 90 and then began getting better in the late 90s. It's all cyclical. I love the Royals and like Cubs-Cards, Royals-Cards is a great, friendly rivalry of people that love and understand baseball. Not like that dreadfully disgusting thing in Boston and New York.

11. The NY-Boston thing has festered for 100 years.
It's ugly to watch. But 1985 was exciting as hell. It was great watching fans of both teams driving back and forth I-70 for the games. How often can fans of both teams in a Series do that?

14. Very rarely. I just think the whole NY-Boston rivalry is bad for baseball
because it is so violent and ugly. I know 85 was fun. My dad loved it and was conflicted but because he was a Cards fan from a kid (he also made a tryout but had to go to Vietnam), he was all about the Cards.

12. I wish there was something there too
I grew up in KC. Lived here throughout the 70's and 80's. Lived through all the Glory Days. Then I moved to St.Louis. Fell in love with the Cards. I live back in KC now. Still Love my Cards, But it still irks me to see what has happened to the Royals.

15. It's just such a great rivalry.
As long as the game is played well, no one gets mad. Yet, feelings get hurt a bit, but it's not like other rivalries in sports. That's why I like the Cards-Cubs and Cards-Royals. If they were any good now, that intrastate rivalry in interleague play would rock!

2. As a Cards fan, but mainly a lover of baseball, I always loved the 80s
when the Royals were actually good (I am fairly young, mid-20s). I remember George Brett, Bret Saberhagen and the like. The guys that played hard and gritty and did there best every pitch. Now, it's all bullshit. I see a lot of the same things in the KC Royals that I see in the TB Devil Rays (in their farm system at one time), they get a lot of talent and then sqaunder it on big names for the big leagues to put butts in the seats for their greedy ass owners. And, the said part is: KC and TB are the two teams BECAUSE of the way their owners spend during a period were every onwer gets 70 million or so before the season even starts. That FUCKING burns me up. That's even before Radio/TV contracts. Source is Jayson Stark saying that the owner of a team who does not spend enough money for his team to at least be competitive should be forced out. Honestly, I agree.

6. The Royals are now run like Wal-Mart.
David Glass is a lousy owner. Only his friendship with the late, lamented Ewing Kauffman got him the team. At least Mr. K. was generous with his fortune outside of baseball.

9. Yeah, and all Glass cares about is making another damn buck.
I dislike Wal-Mart and Glass equally. He ruined the Royals franchise and just made Wal-Mart worse. He's weasly, greedy motherfucker.

4. They should have never fired Hal McRae
Temper aside, he was a kick ass manager. 94 was the last year they had any sort of chance.

10. Second that. I remember hearing stories of McRae's playing days.
I also remember his sons that were pretty damn good in their own right. Not power hitters, but I think we understand why now. :eyes:

13. His son does pre- and post-game analysis, and some in-game color.
Bright guy who admits he was never going to be a star.

16. Yeah, but he was gritty and had his heart in the right spot.
And, that's all that matters to me. And, I loved Brian McRae, personally. I thought he was a hell of player, and he probably had more ethics in his little finger than most of the dopers from his time period.
