BCS will consider using selection committee

BCS will consider using selection committee, but no playoff in sight
By Associated Press
Tuesday, January 4, 2005

MIAMI - The Bowl Championship Series will consider using a committee of college football experts to set the next national title game, but there are no plans for a playoff to decide who's truly No. 1.

``I have to tell you, I really do not see an NFL-style playoff coming to college football any time soon,'' BCS coordinator and Big 12 commissioner Kevin Weiberg said Tuesday.

Weiberg also said the BCS will search for a replacement for The Associated Press poll to help rank the top teams.

Five teams took perfect records into this bowl season, prompting many fans, players and even some coaches to call for a playoff format.
Auburn and Utah won their bowl games while Boise State lost for the first time. Southern California and Oklahoma were to play for the BCS title Tuesday night in a matchup of unbeatens in the Orange Bowl.

1. Boise State was great up until the bowl game. They get no respect though
since they're not a big college community. Too Bad!

2. let's make a joke into an even bigger joke
this will have to do away with the automatic conference bids-the top 8 or 10 teams, depending on the number of BCS bowls--will be the ones to get these bids

the big boys will continue to get bigger while the mid level schools will continue to get nothing

3. That still wouldn't help with this year
It works ok for years like 2002 (tOSU-Miami), but wouldn't have helped last year or this year. Last year had 3 major conference teams with one loss, this year had 3 major conference teams go undefeated. I don't want any huge playoff like basketball, as that would make the season meaningless to some large schools, but a 4-8 team system or a plus-1 could work well. I also hope the automatic bids are addressed. Pitt should have been in AZ for the Copper (now Insight) Bowl, not the Fiesta. There's no way an average at best, 3 loss team who nearly lost to a IAA team should be in a top 4 bowl, especially when there are teams like Louisville, Boise, Cal, and UGA getting left out. Conference champions and title games are fine, but there has to be some minimum standards set.
