Champion Sprinter Lost In The Fog makes his 2006 debut in the $100,000 Oakland Tribune Golden Gate Fields Sprint (Race 8, 4:25 p.m.), 4 & Up, 6 Furlongs. I am really looking forward to his return.

1. Evening Attire and Colita battled it out for last place...

Evening Attire finished 5th with Colita 6th. Colita didn't show anything and had no excuse. EA had a wide trip. The jock didn't give the old boy much of a chance.

2. Tagg's Showing Up wins Coolmore Lexington in 1:46:42...

He is a nice horse.

4. The time isn't too great,

but a three year old allowance race earlier on the card went in 1:48.2
Maybe the track is just slow today.

He won easy.

8. This year's Derby is pretty exciting.

Some years I can't get too excited about it, but this year is shaping up to be a good one.

I have always considered myself a really bad handicapper, but this year I think I'm going to put some work
into it and see what happens.

9. LITF beaten by Carthage in 1:09:08...

Carthage was much the best today. Battled LITF until the turn and then drew off by 3. Holy Shit!
LITF looked like he may have stumbled just before Carthage pulled away from him. He flattened out after that and was lucky to save 2nd. I hope he is OK.

10. Too bad the trainer couldn't have gotten the racing

secretary to write some condition allowance race for him. That was a tough race to go in back off a lay off.
And tough older horses carrying less weight are always dangerous. The winner was carrying eight pounds less
than LITF.

Sometimes it is easy to get overconfident with a great horse like this, but six months off is still six months off.
He needed an easier race first time back in my ever humble opinion. You don't want to have your horse lay it all down
first time back.

11. OB, just checked in today and I see With A City was put down...

in KY with some mysterious illness? Have you heard anything yet?

LITF sure didn't look like himself but, like you say, olders carrying less weight are always dangerous. Carthage is by Smoke Glacken and his get sure seem to be speedy hosses.

Have you seen Tagg's Derby horse? If you have can you give us your opinion of him as to how he's put together and his disposition. He seemed pretty poised and sensible for only having a couple of races in him.

12. I haven't seen Tagg's horse yet.

He was stabled at Gulfstream this winter - I was up at Palm Meadows.


In this morning's Thoroughbred Daily News there was a small piece about With A City.
It said he had diarrhea by the time he got to the clinic. So if it was colitis
it is very difficult to treat even if caught right away.
But some virus' can have that as a symptom too. I don't know if they will be able
to figure out what happened to him. When a horse's gut gets that disturbed, it is a
major problem. The bad bacteria explode in there and the horse dies from the shock
of the toxins.
I'll let you know what I hear about it. The vets usually have a better inside scoop.

13. Bluesthestandard in claimer

Few $10,000 claimers are under as much scrutiny as Bluesthestandard will be in race 2 Thursday at Hollywood Park.

But few claimers win graded stakes, run second in the 2003 Breeders' Cup Sprint, and end up back at the bottom. In a nutshell, that is the history of Bluesthestandard, a 9-year-old millionaire who races Thursday for a $10,000 tag.

Recent events suggest Bluesthestandard is a shaky wagering proposition, though new trainer Bob Hess Jr. said, "He's doing great, and if anything happens I won't run him."

A winner of 19 of 47 starts, Bluesthestandard is entered to run 1 1/16 miles. It will be his first start under jockey Osman Cedeno and first for Hess, who is Bluesthestandard's eighth trainer. While Bluesthestandard's recent race record is good, other factors are vague.

14. Stuff like this makes me sick.

If I was a rich person, I'd claim him just to so I could retire him and let him hang out on a farm somewhere.
I hope nothing happens to him. He ran down in front last time he ran. Never a good sign.

15. I got a knot in my stomach when I read the article...

it kills me that people can do something like this to a horse that has more than paid his way. Hopefully, this article will shame his former owners into doing what is right. Bring Bluesthestandard home and give him the retirement he deserves.

16. Hurricane Run the top-rated European horse of 2005...

..per Timeform's "Racehorses of 2005" annual, which I just got in the mail. He was rated at 134 pounds, which is a little light for a top-rated horse. Ghostzapper got a 134 rating as well, on the strength of only 1 start.
