Sports Announcers Suck

Well, a lot of them do.

I don't expect these people to know a lot, but I do expect them to know what teams are playing. With college sports, it's also nice if they know where those teams are from.

So I'm watching Oregon play Oklahoma, and near the beginning of the game, some player made a bone-headed move, and one of the announcers says they'll be working on that when they go back to Stillwater. Ummm ... okay, I can somewhat accept that this genius thinks the Oklahoma team is from Stillwater since that's where Oklahoma State is. The problem, however, is that the bone-headed move was made by an Oregon player.

Okay, just get past it, Roy. Let it go.

But, I can't. Later, after Oklahoma *finally* puts together a decent drive, Oregon gets the ball back and then fumbles it. OU recovers. Same announcer says "both" defenses playing excellent ball this second half, forcing turnovers. 'Scuse me?

Oh, why do I bother. Just had to rant.

And one more brief rant. Oklahoma's defense is atrocious.

1. I heard the Stillwater gaffe...
:eyes:

The announcers seem to have a strong Oregon bias.

2. Had another once since ...

I think I've become too attuned to it now. Said OU's last 2 touchdowns were desperate gambles that came on 4th down. *One* came on 4th and inches. The other ... oh screw it. :-)

One of 'em just said that this game had been a "gift" to Oklahoma. Everything was just luck, of course.

And I must upgrade my estimate of Oklahoma's defense. It's not atrocious, just not very good.

5. So much for that ...

One final reevaluation.

The officiating in this game was atrocious.

6. That was a disgrace.

Usually the Pac 10 refs give all the breaks to USC, since they rarely need them this goes mostly unnoticed.

This was criminal. Even Fouts, the Duck, was as outraged as he could be.

A disgrace.

Beaver fans are up in arms. :-)

7. Dearlord ...

And I thought the Sooner forums were going nuts.

My upstairs neighbor, who just graduated from OU, got so pissed when that call was made that I thought the roof was going to come down on my head. He came down afterward and apologized, saying he almost kicked in his television. We had a couple beers to ease our pain.

Well, there's comfort in the company of outrage I suppose. :-)

4. OU is a young team....
I am happy because my school (Northwestern) won today, OU is leading and Michigan is leading archrival Notre Dame.

8. fellow sooners, I encourage you to check out this video replay
of the onside kick, so that you might confirm the impressions, offered herein, that the officials of this game sucked.

On the video, you can clearly see that the ball never lands in the dogpile where the officials are looking. Rather, Alan Patrick (on the right-hand side of the screen) very clearly and without struggle gains total possession of the ball at the fifty. This before the second ref even arrives at the dogpile.

How they awarded possession to Oregon is beyond me.

11. Horrid call
I was watching the game and couldn't believe it. Both announcers said it was a terrible call, including Duck alum Dan Fouts.

Then Oregon makes the alltime bonehead manuever of trying a squib kick and rightfully gets it stuffed back to their own 27. I absolutely can't believe it when teams use squib kicks late in the game. It's like they never check the stats of where those kicks are returned on average, as opposed to a deep kick. It's decent strategy with a few seconds left but otherwise incredibly masochistic. I've heard Fouts say he used to beg for the opposition to try a squib kick in that situation.

10. My favorite Madden quote ...

Well, this is a paraphrase of the quote.

Teams that play on natural grass have an advantage because grass gives off oxygen.

I'm thinking grass was definitely involved in that comment, but not the type they put on football fields.

14. Cosell was pretty cool
He was the first reporter to call Muhammad Ali by his chosen name.

I like Jim Lampley also--he took a nice shot at Bill O'Reilly on the air once ("Happy Holidays. And Merry Christmas to Bill O'Reilly). I just wish they'd get Larry Merchant off TV, the guy should just retire already!

15. Pac 10 officials have been screwing non-conference opponents for years
Nothing new here. I was at a Michigan-UCLA game where Michigan clearly intercepted the ball. They took the interception away and told Lloyd Carr, "Coach, it wasn't even close". WRONG, the replay clearly showed that it was an interception. And that was just one call of many - similar things happened in Oregon, and at Washington within the next few years. I was at the Michigan-Washington game, where a Washington player ran over to the Michigan stands and made a throat-slashing motion - totally verboten - and the refs winked and looked the other way. Then they gave us an unpsortsmanlike penalty for an endzone celebration when we scored, even though it really wasn't much at all (anyone who watches Michigan football knows that they don't hot dog it in the endzone)! Michigan does not play Pac 10 games on the road anymore.
