Champion Lost in the Fog Euthanized

Lost in the Fog, last year's Eclipse Award-winning sprinter, was euthanized Sept. 17, three weeks after doctors found three cancerous tumors in his spleen and along his back.

The charismatic champion with the crooked blaze began his career with 10 consecutive victories, a streak that was broken when he finished unplaced in the 2005 TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) at Belmont Park.

"We accomplished what we wanted to do," said trainer Greg Gilchrist Sept. 18. "It was all about giving him quality (time). We did everything we could for him. He was happy and content right up to the end. He went quietly and easily."

Gilchrist had just finished grazing Lost in the Fog outside his barn at Golden Gate Fields on the San Francisco Bay Sept. 17, which he did twice daily, and was heading to the paddock to saddle a horse when Lost in the Fog went into distress.

Fog left behind some great memories though. :(

2. I'm so sorry to see him go...
but, I didn't want him to suffer.

I always looked forward to his races. He was just such an exceptional individual. It has been an honor to watch him perform as a Thoroughbred racehorse.

I'm afraid it will be a long time before we see a horse like him again.

3. They gave him all they could
Aleo and Gilchrist, that is. And Fog gave that and even more ... race after race. I'm sure they're thankful they got to spend some time bringing Fog home and fighting for his life and trying to heal him and soothe him in his last days. Sounds like he was very special to Bay Area race fans, too, so if they got to see him one last time, excellent.

What I'm most thankful for is the generosity all of them showed by hitting the road and racing him a lot. Fog's one of those horses that made racing exciting, and that will be missed.

That Barbara Livingston photo you posted gets me every time, Sid. Very poignant. As Old Broad said, warrior indeed.

7. It sounds like he went downhill fast after the first chemo.

I'm glad too that he isn't suffering. It sounded like the tumors were really big.

I like that picture of Barbara Livingston's. When LITF was here at Belmont last year
I saw him galloping by and couldn't believe the muscles on him. He had muscles on top
of muscles.

I was just such a fan of LITF. It's stupid, but, I feel really bad that he is gone.

He was fast, tough and game. He was a Thoroughbred.

9. I feel real bad too, Sid
It's not stupid - it's just human. I never saw him except on TV - read a lot about him, he was such fun to follow - fun to hear Aleo's respnse to selling him, was perfect - fun to see him win and win and win. I'm sad for his connections, and sad for racing that he's gone, and sad just because a beautiful creature died. At least his connections brought him home, to familiar surroundings, and didn't let him suffer.
