Michael Vick's Talent Level
Is Michael Vick really that talented? Is he worth $23 million a year? Recently, I have seen a number of people writing articles in which they claim Vick's talent and potential has not been properly tapped. Is that actually true, or have many people just made a mistake about Vick's talent level?

I watched the game between Vigirnia Tech and Florida State in which Vick played. Florida State wiped the floor with V-Tech. In addition, although the game was a few years ago I do not recall Vick playing as well as some other remember. I could be wrong about Vick, but I do not remember him playing all that great. So, is Vick really that talented with as much potential as some sportscasters claim, or have sportscasters just made a mistake?

1. Florida State wiped the floor with V-Tech?
Michael made his name in that game...he almost single handedly beat FSU... FSU was highly favored in that game and Vick ran circles around them.

Trust me...as a Hurricane fan I can attest that Vick was one of the best college players ever.

Now as far as the NFL...that's another story.

2. FSU got up by 3 TD's I think and then Vick went nuts
My best friend (big Tech fan) called screaming "ARE YOU WATCHING THIS!?!?" of course I was. Even St.Bobbie said he had never seen anything or anyone like that before.

I think the world of Mr.Mexico and not just because he went to high school in the area I grew up. I think his talent transcends the game right now and there are no anologizes that are sufficient.

Interesting note about Vick- he wanted to go to UVa but at the time the whole football and basketball world were falling all over themselves to get Ronald Curry (national player of the year in both sports) and Vick HS coach told everyone "If you recruit Curry you can't recruit Michael" (he didn't want anyone-UVa- to get Vick and he just sit behind Curry). Curry verbally committed to UVa and at the last minute switched to UNC (Hampton high insiders say it was because UNC was a Nike school UVa WAS Reebok, they are Nike now). So Vick had already gone to Tech and UVa was left holding the bag. Curry himself in an interesting story as he didn't crash and burn due to anything other than the growing curve catching up with him. He did play in the Super Bowl a few years ago as a Raider but that was only on special teams.

3. There are two players within the last 20 years that make you hold your breath
when they get the ball.... It was Vick back at V-Tech, and Barry Sanders.

4. While that is true
I'd rather my team put hardware in the trophy case. He and Payton need to win. Soon. And big. I prefer to hold my breath when that super bowl trophy is lifted over the head of my quarterback (whomever that might be.)

5. I hear you..but I never bought into the meme that a QB is only great
if he wins an SB.

Doug Williams--Joe Theisman--Trent Dilfer...etc....

7. I don't care what the position is
I'd rather see my team win, then watch one very talented player rack up awesome stats and see his season end after 16 games year after year after year.

6. Have you forgotten
Browning Hagle??

:bounce:

Actually I agree but I would add Marino-he was the whole show in Miami for a while and he was worth watching a game just for him.

I used to love that late afternoon cut ins to the Dolphins games.

I am sure there are many who would say the same about Elway but being a Brown's fan I can't utter nor type such horribly blasphemous words.

11. VMI
It fascinates me the terms in which VMI alums speak of that school in Lexington but I find that is seems to stop there. Don't get me wrong I really don't care one way or another about VMI as well as many other Va schools but for all the talk I don't see and big booster club there. I was talking with a friend of mine who has some clients with deep VMI roots and I asked him about why I don't see a lot of money being put back into the athletic department so they have something to brag about and he laughed-seems this is the deep dark secret about Keydet faithful they won't give back near what other grads at local schools do.

Anyway so then there is that.

12. given your lack of interest in the school....
your ingnorance is understandable. last time I checked, VMI had the largest per student alumni endowment of any public institution nationwide. the challenges of luring top athletes to such a challenging environment are comparable to the military academies, you simply do not have many people that want or are able to handle the challenge. it is a handicap that comes with the territory at a military school.

9. I'm not sure he is playing the right position
He isn't as well suited for the pro style of game as he was for the college game. NFL coaches prefer to have their QBs stay in the pocket. Vick is best when he starts running.

Mind you, I don't know what his best position would be. It's almost as if he were too talented to play the position that requires the most talent.

13. Not suited for the NFL game.
He'll always be a runner first and passer second. Would have made a great receiver.

14. Putting Michael Vick in a West Coast offense...
...is like putting a glass of water in the toaster. It might get hot, eventually, but it's never a good idea.
