J - E - T - S - Jets, Jets, Jets!
Edited on Sun Jan-16-05 10:47 AM by Jersey Devil
Doug Brian, Jets' kicker, wins the Scott Norwood NFL Choke of the Year Award for 2005. Normally this Award is not given until the football season is completely over, but Brien's two chokes in two minutes has set a new standard that will be impossible to beat.

5. He gets the award, but he only choked once.
The first was a very good kick. It would have been a record distance for opponents in that stadium this year. He was on target and missed by inches.

The second? Well that was pure all time classic Scott Norwood NFL Choke of the Year Award material!

6. 47 yards was all it was the first time, exact same as Norwood
Record distance? Yeah, I heard that and wonder just how strong the wind it there because that is not really that long a field goal. OK, maybe not a choke the first time, but the second? God, wasn't even close.

7. I think it's also the footing. They always seem cautious
Edited on Sun Jan-16-05 11:32 AM by Osamasux
approaching the ball. Pittsburgh's Jeff Reed does his best kicking on the road instead of at home, which tells me something. (He went 4 for 4 at the Meadowlands and 5 for 5 in Buffalo, plus hit 50 yarders at Dallas and Miami.)

But yeah, that second one was a 'step up to the big time' shot and he just stunk up the joint.

8. Good point - I think one he made at the Meadowlands
was one of the longest ones I've seen there against the wind and I've been going there since the place opened. At the Meadowlands the wind is ALWAYS against you when moving left to right (on the TV screen) and he made one that was about 50 yards as I recall, really surprising me since I can't ever recall a 50 yarder being made in that direction before.

Giants put in a new kind of turf this (or last year?) year and the footing is much better than it had been in the past with artificial turf and then for a few years real grass on square skids.

11. Right, I remember the removable grass system.
I was hoping the could make it work out. Turf is great for making cuts, but too tough on the players. I played a season of softball on it and felt it in the knees after every game. We went back to grass the next year.

The only chance I had to see a game at the Meadowlands was the USFL Generals, unfortunately. That's a tough ticket. It seemed like a great place to see a game.

13. They are tearning down Giants Stadium to build a new one
Construction should begin in about a year or so. Too bad since I think the current stadium is a great place to see a game and finally, for the first time since the place was built they got the footing right. The new stuff looks like real grass and the players say it is much softer than the artificial turf they used to play on, almost the equal of real grass.

10. Isn't he with the Skins?
For a while there when the Skins were signing Jet players like they were going out of style we were calling them the Jetskins up here in NJ

12. Yep, they made him an offer the Jets didn't really counter.
People always think it is easy to replace kickers.

14. I'll give him one choke, but not two.
The odds were very much stacked against him making the first one. And he hit the crossbar on a field where no visiting kicker has made one from further out than 46 yards. That's not a choke.

The second kick is choke city, however.

15. Brien Didn't choke, Herm Edwards and Paul Hackett chocked
1st and 10 from the 26 and they don't gain any yards - and in fact move back a yard after a 3rd in 10 where they kneel down instead of trying an insurance field goal - WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!?!?!!?

I like this statement so much, I think I'm gonna keep it as my sig line, just so I don't have to keep typing it every day.

17. Good job pointing out Edwards (I had the same idea in the Lounge)
Edwards/Hackett made a complete mess at the end of the game. Brien had just missed from a similar spot, and a 40+ yarder is no gimme at Heinz, esp. in the cold at the end of a game. They had the time and the downs to get more yardage, but didn't do jack with it. 3 runs up the middle would have probably gotten them to around the 20 at worst. In addition, while taking the knee was a good idea, it was implemented horribly (not sure if it was Pennington or Edwards/Hackett's fault), as it left them on the left hash rather than the middle. Brien is not without fault, but Edwards/Hackett should feel some of the heat too.
