In this trash-talking bully culture it's nice and a little nostalgic to hear some gentle comments about a violent sport. When growing up a thousand years ago, schools like Ohio State were seen as the basic powerhouses of this country, not just in sports but in education. They still are. Florida U. is another institution which has, in my lifetime, moved into the same status. Clark Kerr, the legendary Regent of the University of California System (during the Free Speech Movement), spoke at Florida in 1964 and confidently predicted that the University would achieve the highest rank in both sports and educational leadership in the near future. He was right. Hopefully, the U of F will stand aside from so much of the hype, sneer and barking that goes on with regard sports; that question is still open. In the meantime, I will enjoy the peculiar numerology (41-14) that my mind kept flashing up three days before the game. Since my brain is like a transmission case, I don't abide such froth as premonition and ESP. Accordingly, I didn't know then who would be on the upside of that number combo! Now, if I can only get a still photo of the helmet-less one making his tackle...
Sincerely, SteveM, U.F. '70
