Dolphins pick Cameron but must work out details
<snip>

"The Dolphins have decided Cam Cameron should be their next coach and are in the process of finalizing details of the hiring, a source close to the process has told The Miami Herald.

The Dolphins and the firm representing Cameron are in negotiations on a contract believed to be for at least three years. The problem that exists is that an NFL coach with no prior NFL experience typically gets a contract for about $2 million a year. However, the Dolphins last week negotiated a contract with Dom Capers to be their defensive coordinator for three years estimated at $8.1 million.

If Capers signs that contract, he would be making approximately $2.6 million in 2007, more than 15 other NFL head coaches. The problem for the Dolphins is working a deal that would not have Cameron making less than one of his assistants.

This doesn't mean the deal won't get done -- it still remains a strong possibility that it will be finalized today.

The team brought Cameron back to its Davie training facility for a third consecutive day this afternoon following a morning of meetings between owner Wayne Huizenga and his staff."

1. Cameron has been hired
I'm not a huge fan of bringing in Cameron. However, it's not like there were that many great options.

Cameron did do a good job with a lot of talent in San Diego, but his resume other than that is rather pedestrian. He was terrible at the University of Indiana. I like what a local radio host said about Cameron. He said that Cameron wasn't worthy of a big time coaching job in the NFL, and he didn't get one with the Dolphins. Our prestige in Miami has fallen over the recent years of Wannstedt and Saban.

I'm wondering if Saban is a stop-gap measure until a better crop of candidates emerge in 2008.

At least with an offensive mind as head coach, we can look forward to losing in a more offensively exciting fashion next season.

2. Boom or bust choice
I'm satisfied with it since Cameron and GM Randy Mueller won't be content with crap like Joey Harrington and other disastrous offensive decisions by the recent regimes. Harrington should be catapulted five minutes from now, if not sooner. I consider that the first litmus test. No way a competent franchise tolerates Joey Blue Skies and his 6 yards per attempt, grinning all the way.

Should be an interesting offseason from a personnel standpoint. Maybe we can find some offensive linemen with a threat of athletic ability. And I wouldn't mind stunning Ronnie Brown by pursuing someone better. He makes me sick by spiking the ball after 8 yard runs, like he managed something remarkable. You think any franchise would give up the #2 pick in the draft for Ronnie Brown? That's what he cost.

Chan Gailey seemed like a 9-7 guy who would have made South Florida shrug.
