Norm Chow - Racism in NFL/NCAA
I'm really surprised, shocked, and a little angry that Norm Chow has not had a head coaching job in the NFL or NCAA. He's been an elite offensive coordinator in college at BYU and USC and now with the Titans and helping Vince Young become ROTY, I don't know how owners and gm's and college athletic directors have overlooked him.

I believe that he has the experience and track record to be a quality college or NFL coach. I think that there is an overt racism in both college and nfl against minority and asians. There is a well documented racism against black head coaches in both ncaa and nfl, and Owners wonder why their losing teams continue to lose.

Here's some of Norm's protoges - Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Ty Detmer, Philip Rivers, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart and Vince Young.

He should have been hired at struggling offensive teams:

Arizona - reuniting with Leinart
Dolphins - what QB? will be drafting one
Oakland - needs an offense

1. Supposedly there are some other factors with Chow
He likes to be left alone to tinker with his specialty, the offense. Chow doesn't like to recruit or do press conferences or booster functions, aspects that are a sidelight requirements of a head coach. That info is mostly from USC message boards but I've seen it confirmed elsewhere.

At this point there's also an age factor since Chow is 60ish. If you look at his resume he spent a seemingly absurd number of years at BYU in the same roles. I don't know if he didn't aspire to head coach at that point, or simply wasn't considered.

Chow apparently had a philosophical dispute with Pete Carroll in 2004, despite USC's great success that year and in 2003. He expected to be named Stanford head coach after 2004 but somehow they preferred Walt Harris, who was canned after two years.

2. age
Well, he was passed over at BYU - which isn't surprising since he is probably not a white morman. But wasn't BYU's offense the best in the nation when he was there, and now they are nothing.

Its pathetic that colleges and nfl teams such as Stanford, Arizona, Miami will not hire Chow, instead they'll continue losing.

If Chow stays with the Titans, they are a playoff team next year.

If I were Al Davis, I would hire Chow, after all Davis won't be around much longer, so why not go out winning a SB.

3. BYU has revived and now has an excellent offense
They quietly had a terrific year including big wins at TCU and in the bowl game against Oregon. But that's very recent. I know what you are saying.

I've been rooting for Chow to get a head coaching stint. I didn't understand it until many posters on the USC boards started hinting that Chow doesn't have the most enthusiastic personality and tends to come across poorly in interviews, plus the aspect of shunning the sidelight responsibilities of head coach.

I do think he's somewhat bitter now. A month or so ago Chow made biting comments about the offensive knowledge of the young early 30s guys who replaced him as USC coordinator, Steve Sarkisian and Lane Kiffin. Now the irony is they have been considered for head coaching jobs, Sarkisian still a possibility at Oakland and Kiffin was a finalist at the University of Minnesota after Glenn Mason was axed.

As far as the Titans, they suck. I'll be wagering against them plenty next season, including under on the season wins prop if it's in the range I expect it to be, somewhere around 8.

Tennessee had 6.15 yards per pass attempt offensively and allowed 7.05 defensively. The opponents ran the ball 506 times. Check every respected NFL stats website and the Titans were near the bottom of the league in almost every significant category. Winning meaningless games late in the season is one of the most fraudulent ways to boost your reputation. Check the Dolphins a year ago. Basically it just ruins your draft position and inflates expectation.

4. If not head coach, maybe Chow could be the next Oakland Raiders O.C.
If Oakland drafts a QB with the first round, it would make a lot of sense (they're talking to Marc Trestman right now -- that guy has been a disaster with every team in the NFL).

6. Give Him A Chance
Edited on Wed Jan-24-07 09:59 AM by erpowers
I think the teams you listed and other teams should have given him a chance. You are right when you say that he has proven he can lead an offense. I think if I had been the owner of the Arizona Cardinals I would have hired Chow. My first thought was to go after Pete Carroll, but then I thought Carroll had his chance in the NFL. I really think the NFL does need to stop hiring the same coaches that failed to lead other teams to winning records. They do need to start giving new coaches a chance. Hopefully what Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy have done will open doors for more minorities. Are you sure Chow wants to be a head coach?

9. like winning
I guess the factors include experience, winning, winning in college, winning in the nfl, coaching hall of fame quarterbacks. Those sound like good factors. If a white candidate coached at BYU for 15 years including heisman winners and steve young, and helped USC to 2 championships, he could be the oakland raiders coach!

Oh yea, what has Kiffin done, nothing compared to Chow. Watch Vince Young make the pro bowl next year and watch Oakland go winless.

10. some people are born to be coordinators
not head coaches. like it or not, personality matters, especially at the college level, you can't really be a lone genius if you are the head coach, you need to be a team leader. Chow excels at nurturing quarterbacks and running a pro-style offense, none of this means he will be a good head coach.

12. actually he does
he just doesn't spend it on the media or the public (which is less important at the pro level than in college) His players love him.

13. there were a lot of Alabama fans that wanted him hired
I don't remember the reason, but the consensus was that he wouldn't want the job.
