Plus the team had two 1,000 yard rushers in Wendell Tyler and
Roger Craig...


I forgot all the players now but the secondary had like three or four Pro Bowlers...


I think that was arguably the greatest Superbowl team of all time...

The '85 Bears in the playoffs...

NFC Divisional Playoff: won 21 - 0 vs. New York Giants
NFC Championship Game: won 24 - 0 vs. Los Angeles Rams
Super Bowl: won 46 - 10 at New England Patriots

I'm no math genius (now Norman Einstein, he was a math genius), but doesn't that mean the Bears outscored their opponents 91 to 10 in the Playoffs? Has any other team come close to that?

Did I mention that the Bears were 18-1 that year including the playoffs?

I'm sorry, but I remember watching the Bears in '85. It always looked like the other teams were in high school comparatively.

16. I wan't trying to disparage Da Bears at all

They were a fantastic team and they did look like they were running down hill on both sides of the ball. A truly great team that exhibited John Wooden's theory of not worrying at all what the other team is going to do just focus on what you are going to do-very positive and foreward thinking.

BTW- (again not to diminish the Super Bowl win) but the Pats imploded in a cocaine scandal. Apparently half the team was completely out of control. South America's team II.

Not greatest Superbowl performance.

At the time, the Bears 46-10 win over the Pats was the most lopsided SB win. (I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the Bears once beat the poor Redskins 77-0 in an NFL Championship Game).

Then again, in the 80's and early 90's, the NFC Championship Games WAS the real SB. Even so, the '85 Bears shut-out the Rams. It doesn't get more lopsided than that.

11. That O-line was out of this world

A friend of mine, who by no means is a Cowboys fan, mentioned that to me a few years ago. That whole team was probably the most talented from top to bottom the league has ever seen. Thank you Herschel Walker (a great too IMHO).

They had to be talented because Jimmy Johnson stayed with his southern football game plan (Bear Bryant football-SPEED SPEED SPEED) and rejected the much easier blocking angles that the West Coast and counter trey offenses afford you.

A truly great team and had it not been for one bad three minute span against the 49'ers in the NFC championship game in '93 they probably would have won 4 in a row....but that is why they play the games.

4. Pats-their tackling won them the game yesterday

and the 49'ers counted on yards after the catch-basically they played pitch and catch and got Rice and Taylor into the open field. The Pats are unbelievably technically sound.

BTW- the 89-90 49'ers team was their best IMHO they were firing on all cylinders at that point.

27. I think you're referring to the '81 Niners

whose backs were Ring and Ricky Patton. The '89 team actually had Roger Craig in his prime and a great blocking & receiving fullback in Tom Rathman. IMO that was the best Niners' team of all time.

17. I'd put my money on the 1978 Pittsburgh Steelers

Perhaps the most complete team to ever take the field. Punishing running attack with Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier. Deadly vertical passing game with Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann and John Stallworth. As for the defense, it was arguably the best defense ever assembled.

The 1984 SF 49ers were an unbelievable team, but I don't think they could have beaten the 1978 Steelers.

As for the 2004 Patriots, that's a joke. There's far too much parity in the NFL today as compared to back then. The 1978 Steelers roster was comprised entirely of players who had only ever played for the Steelers. They were able to hold on to ALL of their stars. The NFL today is a completely different league than back then.

26. The back doesn't make a "punishing" running game...

It's the attitude and committment to "smashmouth" football that creates a punishing running attack. It's the offensive line that creates that attitude probably more than the back himself.

That's what I meant by a "punishing" attack. I fully realize that Harris was much more of a slashing runner than a power back. But it was the attitude of those Steeler teams, one that said, "Whether you want to allow us or not, we're going to run the ball down your throat!" that made the running attack "punishing".

the more modern team is always more likely to win. Better athletes and more advanced gameplans. That said, I do think the teams of the 70's (Steelers, Cowboys, Dolphins, Raiders, etc.) and early 80's (49ers, Redskins) were better overall "teams" in how consistent they were, and their depth at each position. They all had very few, if any weaknesses. In the modern era, free agency has weakened the continuity of the teams, and the increased number of teams has thinned the talent pool. The consistent greatness of the Pats over the past few years is remarkable considering this.
